Air travel with knives/hatchets in checked luggage?

So I'm flying to Oregon this weekend and will be camping at least one night, maybe more. I'm wondering if anyone knows the ins and outs of flying with edged implements in checked luggage?

I would check the FAA's sight or google it. I've traveled with guns and ammo without issue. I had a decent sized fixed blade in my checked bag, but didn't declare it. I don't think it would be an issue.

I checked tsa.gov and it just said it had to be sheathed in the checked bag.

Hmm, I have a Pelican 1150, but it's just a Mora and a Fiskars hatchet. I was just going to put them in my day pack, tie off the zippers and put that in the suitcase.

I've carried knives in checked baggage many times, and I've never had to put them in a case of any sort--just a sheath.

It's the airline (not TSA) that gets the final vote on what's allowed on their airplanes, and they all put the restrictions on the web sites. I just checked American Airlines, and they all knives "of any length and type" in checked baggage, without further restrictions.

I ended up just wrapping the tent stakes, Mora, hatchet and stainless steel folding trowel in the sleeping bag and stuffing that in the bottom of the checked suitcase. No problems.
