Re: I tried to polish a turd.
Chain saw blades , lawn mover blades and axes are not as hard as knife blades.

Re: I tried to polish a turd.
Wow I guess all that time I spent heat treating parts and then using abrasives
When I could have just used a file

Re: I tried to polish a turd.
From Wetterlings: "After grinding, hardening and tempering, the Wetterling axes keep a Rockwell hardness of 57-58."
From Gerber: "Gerber introduced the LMF II in 2005 after releasing the prototype in 2004. With a 3/16 inch thick 12C27 stainless steel blade that carries a Rockwell Hardness of 58 and features a blackened, no glare finish, the LMF II is just about as popular as the original was back in its day."

Re: I tried to polish a turd.
Wetterling axes are heat treated VERY differently from chainsaw and lawnmower blades. Wetterlings are usually around RC-58, whereas my Fiskars X7 is closer to RC-55, to make honing easier.
Lawnmower blades, like machetes, are much softer than knives as a matter of safety since they're under much greater strain:

Source. All John Deere blades have a Rockwell Hardness of 40-C to 45-C. Hardness below 40-C results in a surface that is too soft. Hardness over 45-C makes the blade too brittle.

Chainsaw teeth are usually in the mid-60s (63-68), hence why carbide and diamond sharpeners are needed.

Re: I tried to polish a turd.
You will notice on post 23 where I said between 45 and 58 hardness for mower blades chain saw blades and axes. I didn't bother mentioning extremes in either direction.fromkentucky wrote:Wetterling axes are heat treated VERY differently from chainsaw and lawnmower blades. Re: I tried to polish a turd.
Yeah, but you and I both know that's intentionally vague for the purposes of making it seem like lawnmower blades, knives, files and chainsaw teeth are all more or less of equal hardness when that quite obviously isn't the case.justang1997 wrote:You will notice on post 23 where I said between 45 and 58 hardness for mower blades chain saw blades and axes. Re: I tried to polish a turd.
Lmao. No it isn't vague at all. I posted a range of 13 points on the rc scale. Some mower blades go down to 40. Some chainsaw teeth are in the mid 60's. Metal files fall in a range between 60-65. Saying a knife has to be 60-65 to be any good is dumb.

I find the testosterone enriched discussion of relative hardness mildly amusing.

I love schoolyard style arguments. Hopefully I'm making no one mad. I'm far far from an expert. But I'm damn handy with a bastard file.
