Where I can find custom scales/grips for an Ontario RAT 5?

Edged weapons, blades, pocketknives, swords, whatever has a blade.

Where I can find custom scales/grips for an Ontario RAT 5?

Post by fromkentucky » Tue Jul 02, 2013 2:11 pm

I love the knife, but the handle is 3/4" thick with the factory grips and 3/16" thick blade. I'd like something closer to an ESEE 4, 1/2" or 9/16" thick, or at least with a more rounded, ergonomic shape. I tried Google but I'm not having much luck.

Sweet, I think that'll work. Thanks 86.

I'd prefer Micarta. I may take a file to the factory handle first, just to see if I can contour it that way I want before dropping $50.

I was just gonna use Rocksett. The replacements come with hardware.

Are rivets better?

Sorry was looking at swamp rat

you can use the screws already if that is how the OEM used (not sure) just shorten them

If you use rockset I would use thick rubber bands to hold, you can cut/ scap stuck rubber.

fromkentucky?

I'm actually looking to start carving my own custom scales (first from wax, then wood, than the hard stuff!) Let me know if yer interested, maybe we could work on a custom project together? My Ka-Bar Becker is great, but the paracord wrap is MURDER on my hands when carving spoons!

Absolutely. I just want something more contoured than the factory scales. I want step up to a RAT 7, too, so custom scales would be great.

Anyone else want in on this action? A scale carving workshop as a group project? I'll host? I've been eyeballing some of those cheap damascus blanks for a while now, call it... a month from now?

You know what'd be awesome? To find some 01 Tool Steel or 1095 blanks with Scandinavian or Full Flat grinds.

OAL: 9.5"
Blade Length: 4.5"
Blade Thickness: 1/8"
Blade Width: 1"
Profile: Drop Point
Grind: Deep Scandinavian

I kinda like this one actually, though I'm not too keen on the guard or the hollow grind. I do like the jimping though.

Wow I've ADD'd the hell outta this thread, lol.

I'm also really drawn to the idea of making knives from old, quality files:

I mean seriously, that looks like a Business™ knife. I'd like some jimping on the back and a lanyard hole, but otherwise that's a nice looking knife, and the spine is still a functional file!

Neat. I mainly want to round out the squarish profile and relieve the areas between the screws a bit to better fit my hand.
