Kuksa

Post by nemo » Fri Mar 29, 2013 11:43 pm

Been working on a kuksa for a couple of days. I've been inspired by making a spoon, I needed something to go with it. I have a nice chunk of sycamore that so far is working great. I am using modern tools ( sparingly ) but for the most part using traditional bushcraft tools.

Ok, inside the bowl is done. I never thought it would take so long to carve out 4x2 inch bowl with a spoon knife. My wrist and arm are going to be sore for a week. Going to let if age and settle for a couple of days then shape the out side and handle.

Ok, I'm going nuts. I started a new kuksa with a knotty log I found in my buddies wood pile. This one is going to be 100% old skool style. Free form design with only axe and knives.

I was up late last night carving a matching spoon out of the scrap. I had the inaugural bowl of oatmeal this morning while surveying the back 40 acres ( OK, so it was my suburban back yard ). It still was a good morning.

My grandfather carved all kinds of stuff but I didn't pick up on his skill.. mom has a rolling pin he carved, a mans head and all kinds of other cool shit..... Maybe one of these days I will sit down and give it a shot..

Well this one was looking good till I found this flaw. The knot is rotting and goes all the way to outside bark.

Yeah. My spoon from the Bushcraft Challenge cracked on me, too. It just didn't like the air indoors, time for a do-over!

Keep it in a plastic bag closed loosely. It will self regulate the moisture and tend not to crack, or not so much.

^^ Good tip! As a kid carving Osage orange blanks G-Paw and I would condition the wood blanks in a loosely paper clipped paper bag. Didn't do that this time. Major crackage was the end result. And it *WAS* just a hunk of firewood oak. I should know better, but I'm no expert. Wood butcher third-class over here.
