I'm pushing the panic button

Post by KYgundude » Thu Aug 30, 2012 8:03 pm

Well, not really but I did want to get your attention....

I absolutely hate the doom and gloom "This is the start of it" posts I read on other forums but I really feel this post is warranted. This is not something that I think will happen. It IS here.

As of August 21st the CDC reports the West Nile Virus delivered by infected mosquitoes has been reported in 47 states. Today on the news I heard they found it in Jeffersonville(Source link below). This is probably going to be with us until winter kills the mosquitoes. Any day now you will start hearing about people sick from it and possibly even dying from it. As soon as this happens I am willing to bet insect repellant and citronella candles etc are going to disappear from the store shelves faster than you can possibly imagine. I would like to suggest that anyone who doesn't have these items go purchase them NOW and use them!!

If I'm wrong you are out <10 bucks and still have an item you could use. If I'm right, you'll be thanking me, or at least alive and healthy.

Note: Be wary of deet(Ingredient in most insect repellant) and young children. It's not great stuff but it beats the virus.

I have some mil-style bug spray, them little fuckers leave you alone when it is sprayed on %30 deet......

I also have stacks of citronella candles (for the uco lanterns)
1 Corinthians 13:13

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Just great...
My county has began fogging for mosquitoes without notifying the local bee keepers.

When they fog to kill mosquitoes, they are also killing every other insect the spray touches including beneficial insects.

It's not a secret among entomology departments that mosquito abatement spray programs do not work to control mosquitoes.
Effecting the larval habitat is the only way to control mosquito populations.
Spray trucks don't do that.

Its all PR...
Its pretty bad PR if you happen to be a
beekeeper.

I don't really understand what they think they are accomplishing besides spending their budget from the state in any way possible so that their jobs are justified.

How 'bout they kill the birds.
The birds are the source.
Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.

My neighborhood has some bats. I'm thinking of putting in a bat house to help them live and converge on my backyard.

Until then its deet sprays. West Nile likely wouldn't do more than make me sick, but I hate being sick.
