I used to do some wilderness survival weekends back in my boy scout days. It was great fun, though we did take food with us. Really all you need for the minimalist stuff is a decent knife, I prefer my Ka-bar, flint for fire starting, and something to purify water.

The flint is something I always take hiking/camping/etc because I am terrible at the bow method of starting fires.

Sounds like a fun plan though. See how much I even remember.
