I'm sure there are people who'd find a thin, 1" fire steel useful.

But *my* experience in playing with a variety of fire-starting contraptions have led me to the conclusion that I should keep a Bic lighter in my pocket, another in my bag, one in every vehicle, etc.

I certainly wouldn't call these laces *useless*, but I would recommend that anyone who plans to purchase them go out during a rainstorm on a cold autumn evening and attempt to start a fire with a full-size fire steel first.

Lots of folks can start a fire using primitive techniques on a warm summer day, but doing so under conditions where you actually *need* a fire to keep you alive is exponentially harder. Those who can do this reliably get serious respect from me.

this^ even using magnesium is difficult

Something that small between my fingers, I'd end up cutting myself. Cool concept, mutli use for a single item. However for the price you can buy a bunch of magnesium blocks.

But then the blocks would just sit at home or take up pocket space. These are a free ride.

True, but I think most on here keep the "10 essentials" on person or relatively in each vehicle and bag. Funny thing too, if my backpack is ever searched while on campus I might have some questions to answer. Lol

True. Like Frailer said, I realized a while ago a bic lighter is usually your best bet. I started carrying a zippo though because it has tender in it. You just have to reliably fill the thing with lighter fluid on a weekly basis because it evaporates.

I think a zippo is a must to have in a bug out bag or vehicle. They are a viable asset even when empty. I was sitting in my truck on break at work one day and needed to light my cigarette and only had a empty zippo. I searched high and low in my truck for a lighter but only had the zippo. I had a bottle of cologne and sprayed a little on the wick and wahla a lit cigarette.
