The Lithuanian Riflemen's Union: A Lesson in Irregular War

Fantastic passage I had to read for school. The LRU started as nothing more than one man and his "personally owned" weapons. It became an organization of citizen soldiers that rivaled the regular army (which barely survived WWI).

Read what's available on this preview. After defeating the Russians, the German Freikorps, the Bulgarians and the Poles, the LRU sought to instigate a social change that preached loyalty to the nation, not the state. Their reputation was forever tarnished by their participation in the Holocaust, but their pre-WWII activities are interesting, and almost never mentioned in contemporary American studies.
