A thread for quick tips

Post by Kadnine » Wed Oct 03, 2012 6:37 am

Drop your quick tips for more better camping/survival here!

Here's a tip or four:

- Thompson's Deck Seal waterproofs paper maps, too
- A battery powered mattress pump makes an excellent campfire bellows
- Remember: Grip beer underhanded for drinking, overhanded for throwing

And my first video from the wayback:

A thread for quick tips

Post by justang1997 » Wed Oct 03, 2012 12:49 pm

I like to cut my foam sleep mat into equal sections so it folds flat instead of rolls up. I use duct tape to make hinges to keep it together at the folds. This saves space and makes a handy seat for quick breaks on the trail. No need to unroll the foam only to have it roll back up as soon as you let go.

- Synthetic runners' socks rinse cleaner/softer than cotton or wool when hand washing them in the field.
- Mrs. Dash makes even MREs taste good.
- Write on a piece of paper, "If found please call..." with your phone number and snap a picture. Leave that pic in memory slot #1 of your phone or digital camera.

A thread for quick tips

Used a 5/8 freeze plug drilled into the handle of my Mora 511. I use it as a hand hold/pivot for using a bow drill to start fires.

That's a hot slice of awesome, nemo.

I ball peen hammered a dent into the butt of my Maglite for the same, fire drill purpose. Couldn't make it work, tho. Your idea looks much more stable.

That Mora 511 is a great knife for ~ $10

I can't take original credit for the knife idea, it's been done several ways before. A simple solution for a need is always cool. Keeps the ideas coming.

Tangle free storage ideas ----

GridIt by Cocoon
IMG_20130112_084313.jpg
This handy organizer was on sale at Wal-Mart, apparently it will be a discontinued item there. I really wish I'd bought more than one. One danger, tho - avoid the temptation to store everything on it, or one boat spill and all your gear and redundant gear are gone in a blink.

***

Cord Storage
IMG_20130112_084402.jpg
I like to wrap a piece of cardboard with 550 cord and secure the ends in slots cut on the side. It's lightweight, scalable (old giftcards wrap well with floss, suture thread or sewing thread), and stores flat in a survival grab-drawer or bug-out-bag. I like to store mine in the map pouch behind the water reservoir on my Piper bag. This trick works to store Christmas light strings, too!

Schmear dryer lint with a little petroleum jelly and it lights faster and last longer. Plus if it gets wet it will light.
