Anyone deer hunting in the snow?

Post by Geno » Sat Nov 12, 2022 4:24 pm

Crazy weather. We saw no deer this morning. Only a couple does around 3:00. Still an awesome time. Good luck to the hunters out there.

I was out until about noon. Rain to sleet to snow. Saw a button buck & doe. Only problem I had was I left my waterproof gloves @ home. Gloves got wet & hands were freezing. Stayed as long as I could but when my fingers started getting numb I decided that was it for the day. Went home & drying everything out for tomorrow.

Soon as enough light to shoot, 7am, this guy popped up behind a doe.
I honestly was ready to turn around and leave when the rain, ice and snow mix started at 4am.

Thanks!
I was hunting solo and so glad that I had a wooden pallet to use as a ramp to my tailgate or I wouldn't of been able to get that guy in the truck.

I hunt alone most of the time & fought that a couple times with a big buck & a couple does. Bought a Jet sled I throw in the truck when I hunt now. Helps when dragging them out of the woods & also getting them in the truck.

I hunted. Only saw two 4 pointers about 8 am. Then nothing all day. Left around 3. Will be back tomorrow. Weather didn’t bother me much. My blind seemed to stay pretty dry. Mostly had rain and sleet but stayed dry inside.

That's really cool!
I have one of those deer dolly's that does a decent job of dragging smaller deer out but this one hung over the top and the bottom.
I just use an old tarp and pull straps to drag the big ones out.
I use the pallet like a ladder then yank the deer up with me.
Another thing I do that REALLY helps in field dressing is I take about six, one-gallon jugs (old milk jugs, etc) and fill them full of water to rinse out the chest cavity after field dressing. Helps keep the mess out of the truck and plus it helps to clean off the mess afterward.

 Apparently my ex-wife who hated hunting and the thought of killing bambi, was out with her new boyfriend in the hunting blind all day saturday...

Funny when they meet someone new & totally change. My ex was the same way. My ex was totally against me getting a motorcycle & would never ride on one but it was ok that her now boyfriend has had one for years.

could use a rope over a tree limb and the vehicle to pull it up and into the bed?

My Dad showed me a simple trick. He used to restore/collect old IH Cub Cadets, and to load them he had a pulley attached to a chain in the center, with that chain attached to the tie down points in the bed of the truck behind the cab. He would then use a strap or rope, and secure one end to a fixed point, with the other end going through the pulley, then attached to whatever he was loading. Then Mom would SLOWLY drive forward, pulling it up the ramp into the truck bed.

I hunted opening weeke d and sat thru the crap on Saturday. I went out the 19th and shot this guy at 7am. Just barely enough light to see him thru the scope. First buck on my own farm. Couldn't be happier.
