While I know even the least expensive will still be high I've been looking around, want something more rifle/carbine based over a pistol style, small caliber, selectable fire...what would the gurus suggest?

There is a lot of different upper setups available.

Do they make a .22lr conversion for those?

I think that's the only way I could afford to shoot it, because I'd want to shoot it ALL THE TIME.

I believe the current price of registered LL is about $10,000-$12,000.

Okay...I will quit post pics of this Small Machine Gun, but I love it.
There is just so much you can do with it and a lot of support from modern manufacturers.

Not full auto, but slidefire is a quick, easy and affordable fix......

At least fills the gap until you find the FA you want and wait for all the paperwork to clear.

You said you wanted a rifle carbine based gun.A lightning link can be had in the 7-8K range along with a AC-556(or less) or an FN,FNC. Thise are in 5.56. Another very fun gun that gets overlooked is a MK760.Its based on the S&W 76 and is a blast to shoot.Smooth and accurate. Not as many options as a M11 or something but its a good gun.Its in 9mm.

I got the winner... full auto airsoft, yep I said it. I was in satan-mart today picking up some ammo and wound up buying a electric crossman airsoft. I am actually haveing fun going around shooting random crap in the back yard in full auto. I even mounted a laser sight to it I had laying around!

I've got some serious airsoft guns that will make you giggle like a school girl. MP5's, M4's, Ak's, G18C's, Mac 10, etc. Most are full metal and 350+ FPS.
