Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY 3rd) Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY 3rd)

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The Connecticut school tragedy has the country and lawmakers in Washington bringing up the gun control debate.

During a stop to deliver holiday cards for the homeless at Louisville's Wayside Christian Mission, Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY 3rd) addressed the controversial topic of gun control and what's next for the issue in our nation's capital.

"While again it is unlikely that Friday's insane massacre of children could have been prevented by any specific gun control law, it's also undeniable true that the perpetrator of the massacre was a product of a culture that sees guns as a solution to problems, whether psychological or other," said Yarmuth.

Yarmuth went on to say that we must be determined to change that culture.
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

wow. At least he knkows the truth, wether he does the right thing or not.

I think all these 'active shooter' video games are more to blame than anything. Call of Duty, etc... these punks sit and play these games all day every day with the realistic blood splatter, etc., it desensitizes them and excites them to do the real thing.

My stupid step-son would play CoD for 16 hours straight, and his mom would let him- until I pulled the plug on that. He would wake up, roll over to the x-box, start playing and play until midnight, only coming out of his room to grab a pop-tart and pee. Thankfully he had parents who put a stop to it and instilled morals and values in him; other kids don't have this.

Congressman John Yarmuth | Silence on gun violence not an option
http://www.courier-journal.com/section/ ... onnecticut

Congressman John Yarmuth, D-Louisville, said at a news conference Monday that he would support a comprehensive new package of gun control legislation he believes can pass Congress in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting.

“I have been largely silent on the issue of gun violence over the past six years, and I am now as sorry for that as I am for what happened to the families who lost so much,” he said in Louisville.

While Friday’s massacre couldn’t have been prevented by any specific gun law, he said, new laws require background checks and gun shows, limits on high-volume ammunition magazines and better enforcement of existing gun laws could go a long way.

“Doing nothing is not an option,” he said during an occasionally emotional speech, in which he argued that while mental-health services need to be expanded the shooter was also a “product of a culture that sees guns as solutions to problems.”

Yarmuth said his office had received hundreds of calls pushing for more regulation since the shooting, but recognizes that gun lobbies such as the NRA will likely push back on such attempts, which have often failed in the past.

But he said the grassroots outpouring of support may signal a “tipping point.”

Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, is also scheduled to address the issue in a statement in the Senate later Monday, a spokesman said. Yarmuth said he expects that legislation on assault ban weapons will be reintroduced in the Senate and the House.

Video games arent the problem. Kids who have been raised by them with no moral compass are. But its not the game's fault, its the lack of parenting.

Re: Did Yarmuth just say something halfway intelligent on guns?
he's said more of the same wrong things, Beshear however said something good.

http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Yarm ... 03341.html
Yarmuth says he believes politicians have been bullied by the NRA and urged them to come together to take action.

"I intend to be a part of that action," Yarmuth pledged,

Choking back tears, Congressman John Yarmuth says he's received hundreds of calls about gun control.
Meanwhile, Governor Steve Beshear says he too wants to work, listen, and instate meaningful change.

"I'm a strong proponent of the 2nd amendment and Connecticut has pretty strong gun laws but it didn't prevent this from happening," Beshear said.
This is a time to emphasize, gun free zones are an enemy to our lives.

Look at what happened after 9/11 - pilots now can have guns in the cockpit,
this is the kind of "change" we need; we need to eliminate gfz's, period.

gfz's create an outrageously vulnerable spot in our society, this vulnerability needs to be squelched.

we can't predict every nutbag or every jihadi; we can shut them down sooner.

i've been saying this for a while, CCW is exactly like CPR. there is a reason school staff are required to take CPR - it's due to SECONDS vs. MINUTES,
a human can die in seconds if cpr is not administered,
a call to paramedics takes minutes for them to arrive.

a badguy shooter can be stopped in seconds by a ccw person,
a call to police takes minutes for them to arrive.

we should gather all the incidents where an armed person stopped a shooter EARLY, greatly reducing carnage -- those stories need a lot more attention to the masses who just don't hear about them. Also harp on the armed-pilot situation. Harp on the fact that after years of gang violence from 1987-1994, we finally went shall-issue ccw in most states. Gun control does need changing - it needs to be tossed.

Don't let the spindoctors/gungrabbers say we're being selfish and just want our toys, this isn't about having tacticool toys vs. safety of children,
it's about gross vulnerability vs. safety of children.
overreaching gun control is facilitating these murders. more gun control will increase murders. there are so many examples already existing that it's not even debateable.

look to the change of disarmed pilots pre-9/11 to armed pilots post-9/11 as hope and precedent for the right change.
look to the change of no-ccw pre-1994 to pro-ccw post-1994 as hope and precedent for the right change.

gunfreezones have got to go!

That's what I just watched. He said Obama needs to take charge and make tougher gun control laws.

Guys, I was basing what I said in the title from the way the wave3 article was worded. The CJ put in a lot more detail and thus changed what dipshit said.

Yarmuth was, is, and always will be, Obama's lapdog. And Courier Urinal is the yellowest rag in this part of the country, no pun intended.

Beshear will only do what's good for Beshear, he couldn't give 2 fucks for what we, the people want.

I have no problem with *you* playing video games. Or watching porn. Or owning select-fire weapons, for that matter.

But youth today are exposed to much too much, much too early.

Parents are the real problem, of course, but the movie and video game industries certainly aren't helping.

They don't have to help raise our kids. They are submitted to a rating system to what age is appropriate and if the parents are buying it for them with an older age rating than their child well we are back at the parents. I don't need all movies to be puppies and rainbows because the new generation of 16 yr old moms wants to Facebook all day and sit their kids in front of call of duty. The rating system is there for a reason whether the kids end up with it isn't the point since it is being handed to them. Millions of other kids understand a game from real life. I don't want you to change your mind but passing the buck IMO isn't the answer and the actual people need to have the finger pointed at them. The whole award for everything, you're special, it's not your fault generation of kids has been the steep decline of this country and lots of respectable people have been warning others of this pc nightmare that has been created.

Sense of entitlement, no morals, unattentive parents, spilt households at a higher rate, etc

Yep; but that's not all. I think movies and games are part of the problem, but I put easy access to the Internet (and, thus, easy access to anything and everything) at the top of the list.

There was a *huge* difference in raising my oldest and my youngest kids...only 8 years apart. One was born in '84, the other in '92.

We're one of those backward families that believe every child should have two parents, and one of them should be at home to greet them when they return from school, but even so it's excruciatingly difficult to be attentive enough.

It's tough for *good* parents to raise kids these days.

I thought this person's comments after the article were good, and wanted to give it some attention:

http://www.wkyt.com/home/headlines/Ky-l ... 77421.html
GunsCanSaveLivesToo • 4 hours ago

I am a middle school teacher in KY. I do not think it is affordable to hire police officers for every school nor do I think it is necessary. This kind of shooting is an extremely rare and unlikely occurance.

That being said, schools are a very soft target indeed. Criminals know that schools are absolutely gun-free zones. They will meet no resistance. Even if one police officer was hired, someone bent on a mass shooting would know he just had to get past one person.
I think it would be a deterent but not sufficient.

Most schools have teachers, administrators or other personnel who are ccdw holders and people who are experienced firearms users. There should be several persons in each building who are armed. The students do not need to know who those people are. But would-be criminals would need to know that schools have armed adults and they don't even know who is armed.
I think that would be a deterrent and possibly a life saver.

The teacher and secretary who tried to stop the shooter were attacking a gunman with their bare hands. If they were armed, or had access to a locked safe containing a weapon, they might be alive and many lives may have been saved.
