Yale grad students begin ‘symbolic’ hunger strike for benefits

A group of Yale University graduate students are engaged in a “symbolic” hunger strike — rumbling stomachs may be filled with food — for better benefits.

Student union Local 33 began a “collective fast” in front of University President Peter Salovey’s home on Tuesday. News of their efforts for collective bargaining reached CNN’s Jake Tapper on Thursday when a former student shared a pamphlet given to participants.

“Update: the Yale grad student union is holding a *symbolic* hunger strike (they eat when hungry) Still inspirational,” Dimitri Halikias of Brookings’ Center for Children and Families tweeted on Wednesday.

“Yeah that’s not really how hunger strikes work,” responded Politico Editor in Chief Blake Hounshell.

“I eat when I’m hungry too but I don’t call it a hunger strike,” wrote Mr. Tapper.

A university spokesman told the school newspaper on Wednesday that students’ “Fast Against Slow” is “unwarranted by the circumstances.”

“A hunger strike is a thing that comes to mind for prisoners who are being mistreated,” Nicholas Vincent GRD ‘17, the chairman of the Graduate Student Assembly, added. “I think it’s not outlandish to say that they’re putting themselves in considerable harm for this.”

The Washington Free Beacon noted on Thursday that Yale doctoral students earn “a stipend $30,000 a year, receive free health care, and have their $40,000 tuition paid in full.”

Student Union Wants to Ban Clapping and Cheering Because it Excludes Deaf People

Britain’s largest national student union has told attendees of its annual conference they would face “consequences” for cheering and clapping because these forms of expression exclude deaf people.

The National Union of Students (NUS), which includes most university student unions, held a two-day conference on Tuesday.

During the conference, audience members were repeatedly warned that they must stop whooping and expressing support for a speaker because it has “serious impact” on the accessibility of the conference, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Instead of clapping, the students were advised to use “jazz hands” – a gesture when people wave their hands in the air – as it’s believed to be more inclusive to people with hearing problems.

Student publication The Tab captured a video showing some students doing “jazz hands” after the election of the new student union president on Wednesday:

The union’s committee member Estelle Hart, who chaired a session on Thursday, told students: “No whooping, it does have a serious impact on some delegates ability to access conference.” She later reminded students again, saying “gentle reminder not to whoop”.

Shelly Asquith, the NUS vice president for welfare, also brought up the issue during the conference, saying “We’ve had a number of requests that people stop whooping”.

In response to the complaints, the Durham University student union proposed a motion at the conference that would see clapping and whooping banned at all future NUS events. According to the motion, “access needs of disabled students are disregarded/overlooked in terms of conference member behaviour and NUS structures”.

The motion calls for “reduced cheering or unnecessary loud noises on conference floor, including whooping and clapping” and warned of “consequences for those who ignore this requirement”.

This isn’t the first time the student union has tackled the issue of clapping. In the past, some NUS events banned clapping because it might “trigger anxiety”.

The slain Florida teenager -- killed by George Zimmerman five years ago -- will be awarded a posthumous bachelor's degree in aeronautical science from Florida Memorial University.
Martin's parents, Sabrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will accept the degree on his behalf during the school's spring commencement on May 13. Fulton is an alumnus of the school, a historically black university in Miami Gardens, Florida.

The aeronautics degree is in "honor of the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot," the school said in a Facebook post. Florida Memorial's Department of Aviation and Safety has a designated Cessna pilot training center, and the school also houses the Trayvon Martin Foundation.
"Trayvon had an obvious love of flying," university spokeswoman April R. Silver told CNN. Martin took some aviation classes in high school.
On her Twitter page Fulton thanked the university for honoring her son.
Martin was shot and killed in February 2012, by Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman had called 911 to report a suspicious person in his neighborhood and later got into a fight with the 17-year-old. Zimmerman said he shot Martin in self-defense.
The shooting sparked protests nationwide for months.
Zimmerman was acquitted of the crime in July 2013.

Sorry, but this guy may have been indirectly responsible for dozens, even hundreds, of gun deaths. I have sympathy for his family, who probably needed it even before he shot himself, but I have no sympathy for him.

No sympathy from me. He obviously didn’t care about actual statistics. He obviously didn’t care about protecting his family because if he did, he wouldn’t have guns in his home…you know…guns that people use to kill themselves or others.

Consumed by his own pain and Hate. That truly is sad. My condolences to his family and friends. When will we ever learn that toxic masculinity and aggression do not create a peaceful existence or a comforted soul.

Live by the gun, die by the gun. Sorry for his family, but I don’t think he’ll be much of a loss to anyone else.

Poor man was covering his pain by trying to be tough. But, many people just like him are collectively responsible for the deaths and pain of thousands upon thousands of others by promoting our evil gun culture. He may be a sad figure but he chose how to assuage his pain and that way helped to cause incalculable damage to innocent people. So I can’t be sorry he is gone.

Another mentally ill person owning guns…relieved that he didn’t try to take innocent people with him. His note that he left is very telling!

Sorry, but I cannot say that I feel any sorrow. One less pro death person on the earth! To his family, my sympathies.
