Caucus - did you go? I did!
Just got home from the Caucus.
Drove up and parking lot at Oldham County High School was PACKED. This was the only caucus spot in the county. Parked in the hinterlands and hiked over, dreading the wait i was sure was coming. Wrong!
I spent more time walking over and finding the end of the line to get into the caucus room than I did actually IN the line.
I got there at 11:30. It was very well organized. In the actual voting area there were many lines, according to last name. They moved fast as well. A bunch of tables set up with little booths for coloring in the selection made the actual voting fast easy, then drop it in a box and done. In and out in less than 15 minutes, wham bam. I was back home less than 45 minutes after i left, and i am 10 minutes from the high school.
I asked one of the caucus workers if it had been this busy since it opened at 10. He said no, it was even busier early. I loved seeing the turnout. A number of people brought their kids. That warmed my heart, too. It was great to see so many smiles on a rainy Saturday!
I liked this format.
First, having it early in the year meant that our selections are relevant. The May primary is very late in the nomination cycle. The result is already a foregone conclusion most of the time. This hurts turnout because too many say "why bother, it won't matter, anyway." I believe this creates the habit of not voting rather than participating.
Second, having the caucus early means that our selections do affect the outcome. It can't hurt us in Washington and other places if Kentucky is looked upon as "relevant." Just look at the past 8 years. Obama neglected campaigning here, and then proceeded to almost single handed dismantle the coal industry. Just label it bad and kill it instead of encouraging and funding research into better methods of burning it. After all, it's just coal miners, it's just Kentucky, and they don't matter, right?
All in all, color me happy with the whole thing.
What was your experience if you went?

It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. Did mine at 10:15. Drove 12 miles there, in and out in 5 minutes with the same setup as you Viv. Smooth and easy.

Went to my designated location in Elizabethtown. A little bit of confusion due to some poorly placed signs but once that was figured out things went well. Very good turnout.

Re: Caucus - did you go? I did!
Our location was extremely busy. It surprised me a little. Fortunately, the line to sign in for a ballot was empty for our last name. We walked up, SHOWED AN ID, signed the book, got the ballot and voted. Probably took all of 5 minutes.

We went to Greenwood Elementary school on Greenwood road. Traffic was lined up in both directions.People were being sent to PRP high school next door to park, then walking across a narrow bridge. Once you got into the gym it didn't take long, just find your name for your line. We had one couple in front of us. The longest part was getting in to park, parking, walking in and out, and waiting for the worker to find your name in the book and show you where to sign. It was the biggest turn out I have ever seen. The worker at the ballot box said there was a line when the doors opened and it had been busy all day. For there to be such a crowd in a small place, people were in a good mood. We did not hear anyone unhappy or complaining about anything. One woman actually said this was exciting and it being the first caucus here. I thought there might have been a visible Police presence to run off the protesters that I kind of expected to see.It was more like a party mood.

Outlier. Just conform to the system. We'll take care of the rest... Big ole' hairyFrailer wrote:Kentucky doesn't allow me to participate in primaries.

Went at 11 after wife had to go to ER. Lots of people and parking lot was packed. Glad to know some more people of the same mind in my county. Voted for Trump. Have my reasons. Cruz is not eligible and Rubio doesn't stand a chance. Happy with the turnout.

Went twice. Once at 10 am and again at 12. Couldn't even find a place to park and the line was wrapped around the school. It was a total cluster f*ck.

Re: Caucus - did you go? I did!
I went around 3:00. Very crowded but all there were smiling. Finished by 4:05. I was happy to see turnout. Voted Cruz as I agree with his views the most. I realize the numbers may not be there for him, but it is the primary. Trump will most likely win. With the 2 party system we have, I will vote for the candidate which opposes the Liar or the avowed socialist. Even if holding my nose is necessary.

Re: Caucus - did you go? I did!
We voted Tuesday. Here in Texas, they had separate polling places for D's & R's, which I have never seen before, even living in TX for over 30 years.

Re: Caucus - did you go? I did!
I was able to get in and out reasonably fast. I talked to a caucus worker about only having 30 minutes for lunch and they put me in at the front of the line. The Oldham County high school was packed to the gills!
