Post by Rem700 » Sat Jun 01, 2019 6:43 pm

I want to get a set of w(h)et stones for knife and tool sharpening. Everything from hunting knives to the blade on my hand planer. What is a good set you would recommend and what grits should I get? Also any other accessories (oils or polishes). Give the info!!!!

Once you can sharpen a knife, it really don't take anything that fancy. I have everything, from water stones ,to oil stones, natural stones, diamond stones, sharpening machines, heck I got a KMG blade Smith's belt grinder. I say all that to tell you that it's not about what you get so much as how you use what you got. Books are written on the subject so there is much to say on the subject.

I recommend that you get a 3 set from Nortons , as large as you can afford. These are quality oils stones ( my regular use stones) oil them with the fancy honing oil they come with until it's gone then use light oil such as diesel fuel, you are just trying to float the little metal residue off the stone so that it dose not get clogged up.

Here is my first choice

If that's to much money then this is an option but be aware I have never had too much stone but I have had too little. Even still this is a larger set but significantly cheaper

Stones, what year do live in? DMT makes the best diamond sharpeners. A bit pricy but they never wear out or need flattening.

That is an awesome deal on that set. The stones are almost $40 each if purchased separately..

Buy a Work Sharp and never look back. Stones are for cavemen.

I have a work sharp. It works well for a basic sharp edge. But I can’t get razor sharp paper slicing with ease on it. Maybe it’s me.

$200 for stones or diamonds is way better than $1200 lol. Thinking I’ll try the diamond sharpeners.

Dad has one of those. It is THE way to sharpen planer blades.

I use an edge pro to make quick work of kitchen knives

I’ve been able to. I even bought a leather strop belt for it but haven’t used it yet. It took me a couple of tries to get it right.

Diamond stones are good, my carry/pack stones are diamond. Mine load up so you got to wash them out more often then others, the loading also alters the grit making them cut less effective until it's washed. Diamond shines on the real course work, nothing hogs metal like they do.
