Looking at gun safes..opinions welcome

Post by ssracer » Tue Feb 21, 2017 8:00 pm

I'm looking to upgrade my current stack on safe to something with more room. I have been to shooters looking at their Liberty safe's and tonight went to Cabelas, also looking at Liberty safe's.

I was initially looking at a 30gun which was basically the same as the one I was eying at shooters but is on sale at Cabelas for a little less. More room than I currently have and it still has a combination lock.

From there they have another 30 gun that has better fire protection as well as top and bottom bolts that the other doesn't have so it's a bit more secure, but it has an electronic keypad lock. I'm not sure I'm keen on that. It's just under $200 more than the first one.

Then there is the big boy 48 gun which I had to check would even fit where I want it and apparently it will. It's got the same upgrades over the first one that the second one has, but again has the electronic keypad. It's another $200 over the second one, but it comes with a door organizer for pistols, mags and documents installed which would cost me at least $135 to add to either of the other two.

Probably going to move on one of these this week, just gotta decide which one. If the electronic keypads are ok then I'll likely go all the way to the big one. But I could easily make do with the 30 gun with a combination lock for $400 less. I'll be doing some research, but thought I'd ask you guys here for opinions and what not as well.

I like my Liberty Fat Boy Jr.
God made man.
Samuel Colt made all men equal.
John M. Browning and the 1911 made some men more equal than others.

Just went online and that 48 gun fat boy jr is on sale for $1399 online at Cabelas. That makes it even more tempting. Just need to do some research on those keypad locks.

Non electronic is the way to go. Batteries die and circuit boards short out.

Keypads are fine IF they come with a key override. Batteries and electronics can fail
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Looks like if ordering online I can choose dial or keypad for the same price. That may have just sealed the deal.

Costco has this one in store for $499. Only thing is it's an electronic lock.

I wonder what gauge steel that one is because it's like 300lbs lighter than the Liberty. Also doesn't have top and bottom lugs it looks like

Ordering from Cabelas online ships direct to you from the manufacturer with no option to ship to the store. That adds $275 to the price. May have to swing back by there again and talk to someone and see what options they have for buying there.

My 64gun Cannon does, but it also has 5 on the sides I stead of 4 also. It was also a few hundred bucks more from Tractor supply. Heavy as fuck!! Two things I don't like. The electric pad only, and the interior layout is flat out fucking stupid...I plan to change up the shelves/rack part to my liking at some point.

So I can order this safe direct from Liberty for just a little more than getting it from Cabelas. Maybe that will give me some leverage when I go talk to them..lol

Check out Willis Klein. They have a few different mid to upper tier brands. Prices are not terrible. They run specials a lot.

I doubt I could fit that where my safe goes. The fat boy jr is going to be a seriously tight squeeze. I had to make a template just to make sure it was doable..lol. Anything bigger and it would have to sit in my living room

You've never heard of Willis Klein Locksmiths? They have a store by the railroad tracks on Westport road. The "Safe room" is in the back out in the warehouse. It's worth a look, imo.

Those S&G combo locks are good locks. I have one on my cheapo safe.

Don't go keypad.

I think the S&G locks are made in Kentucky, Nicholasville maybe?? I have the S&G manual lock on my Fat Boy.

Also check out Basham Lumber on Logsdon Pkwy in Radcliff. That is where I bought my FatBoy and they offer very reasonable delivery.
