Perfect Sling?.....MAYBE!
Over the years I have run nearly every sling out there, I am sure many of you have as well. Seems like even though I like a certain sling in some way, I was always looking for that sling that I would not change a thing about.
Slings are hugely subjective I mean there are so many ways to use them and really no wrong or right way , just what works for you. I myself like a 2 point , I wont argue the whole 1 point 2 point thing. I have found ways to use a 2 point the same way as a single point and I like being able to jump off a deer stand ladder , or ride a 4 wheeler without getting beat up by a swinging rifle. I also like the old GI slings that are popular in the Appleseed program, I like being able to run a loop sling when I need to.
On my short list of slings that are out there I like these the best
Vtac, though the ALICE buckle is gross overkill and over complicated, and the webbing is to thick.
Vcas, Lacks the range of adjustment I like and the webbing is again pretty extreme for somthing that carries at most a 12 pound load
Way of the gun sling, lacks any sort of quick adjust but they got the whole simple lightweight thing down, when it comes down to it though its a cheap wally world strap with some para cord, people been running these for 5 to 7 bucks for years with out the way of the gun label.
IDF sling, its simple light, a bit wide, but really lacks any sort of quick adjust, still its nice on old KISS type rifles and AK47s
GI sling, its great for positional shooting but no so much for anything else.
I really hate what seems to be a trend to build them beyond what is needed, the webbing that gets used now a days is gross overkill , and it seems like they do it to make some claim that it some how makes there sling better. Im not binding down APCs in a cargo hull with it, its holding my rifle , fancy buckles that could moor a boat , its just not needed , and not worth the extra weight or bulk.
I have just not found a single sling that suits my needs or desires , so I made it.
Simple lightweight webbing, 3 triglides/ladder locks and a simple buckle.

3 triglides/ladder locks
1 strap buckle
2 4ft long pieces of lightweight 1in nylon webbing
what ever attachment hardware you want or none at all.
my build cost was around 7.50

I did a version of that but it uses alice pack shoulder strap adjusters for a quick adjust. Works awesome, lightweight and super adjustable. I have one with hk clips and one with the ball detent quick release things.

Seems to be a terrific design SOL. You should patent it and sell it!

I would likely as well. Looks simple, useful, and not terribly complicated. I've been trying to find one that suits me as well. Good job.
Next time though, try to take pics without your cock in each one!

Definitely looks like something done right. The only qualm I have with slings like yours is the loose running end.
My current favorite sling is the VCAS, though I agree that it is not as adjustable as I would like. You have to dial in the initial length pretty well.

Re: Perfect Sling?.....MAYBE!
The range of motion with the VCAS is just not enough , if it tightens up enough then its to tight when I want to use the rifle ,and if I loosen it up enough to use the rifle it never tightens up enough.
The Proctor sling if you do away with his Vietnam era para cord mounts offers a wider range of adjustment but the adjuster moves all over the sling.
My method , as with most slings they have to suit your method, is to let the sling all the way out so there is no tail when using the rifle, but you still have a tail when the rifle is stowed. I looked at putting a keeper on the tail but when I pulled it real tight it would make a big floppy loop. Big floppy loop VS tail...?
The webbing I used is very light weight, still plenty up to holding a rifle ,but as light as I would ever want to use. Im actually replacing all my slings with them I like them so much.

Re: Perfect Sling?.....MAYBE!
This seems like the perfect tactical sling for the non tactical person also... I've been looking for slings to stick on my ARs and scar. Everything seems way over the top and complicated for me. This seems very simple and perfect for anything I could possibly want in a sling. Only sling experience I have is old leather hunting rifle type slings and recently gi Appleseed sling. Where can I find the stuff to make one of these? Mail order or local shops?

Depending on what each rifle has, some have HK hooks, some run swivels , some I just loop through the slots.

Nice job. That would be perfect for a M14/FAL. My bolt rifle sling is very similar to that but heavier.

Re: Perfect Sling?.....MAYBE!
Ya for its to light a sling for even some of the mass outfitted ar15s. It pushes the envelope on light weight, on some of the larger guns you would need to step up to the next thicker webbing. On bolt guns I am still a fan of a more traditional National match type sling , be it a a WW2 M1 Garand sling , or a 1903 leather sling, something you can run as a good loop sling for positional shooting and a carry strap when you need it.PDM wrote:Nice job.
