This ammo is a minimum of 11 years old probably closer to 15. I haven't added to that loose can of ammo since before I moved. I don't see them swing that helpful with ammo that old.

Wouldn't hurt to drop them an e-mail and you never know, Remington needs all the good PR they can get right now.

Is it a bad round or out of battery firing?

Looks like a bad round. It blew out the rim and was fully seated in the chamber.

Gotcha.

I would have bet it was an out-of-battery discharge, which aren't terribly uncommon with rimfire ammo, but that solid firing pin imprint has me scratching my head.

25% of the rim is intact and part of that is where the firing pin struck it.
Maybe the previous bullet was a squib and this one has enough pressure to shoot both bullets out and blow out the back of the case??

I just checked the can, no debris inside and no new baffle strikes.

5.7 pistol took a bite out of the last 2 baffles. I have since picked up a Gemtech 5.7 can.

I guessed 'Remington' .22 before I even saw what it was...

Glad you didn't get hurt!
Makes you glad that you followed safety guidelines I'll bet.

Don't buy Remington rimfire ammo has been high on my list of safety guidelines for many many years.

I've never seen a case head blow out that bad before. I've seen plenty that blew out a chunk of rim, but never 3 different chunks at once. That must have been a wild ride and a real eye opener. I saw the blast marks on your hand, did you get burned?

Check the barrel for any rings.
Old ammo usually will not have a over pressure due to age of powder but likely to have a squib.
Which could cause a pressure spike.

If the previous round cycled the slide it wasn't a squib. Did you have to rack before the kaboom?

I was able to go back to the gun range and get security cam footage of the boom.

Here is a over pressure load in a rimfire device that happened just now

5 or so. I was doing mag dumps at a steel target in the back yard.
