First 22 rifle?
First 22 rifle?
New shooter looking for a first 22 rifle. To learn with iron sights first, and then eventually to put a scope on to learn to shoot scope. Want something with good accuracy out of the box, and that will be easy to mount a scope on when the time comes.
Suggestions? Is the 10/22 really all that? I've been looking at Savages and liking them too. Just a neophyte looking for guidance.

Re: First 22 rifle?
10/22 is always a great one. Remington 597 is also a good one. One question to ask yourself is do u want a bolt action or a semi-auto? That will at least narrow the search. I know there are also lots of cheaper rifles out there that are great for plinking.

I'll keep my eyes open for any deals I may come across. What was the brand/model of that bolt action 22LR we fired at Knob Creek? Is that indicative of what you're looking for? It shot pretty well for iron sights (can't remember which one it was. Lemme look at their online shop...)

Can't go wrong with a 10/22 for sure but if your wanting a bolt action I would highly suggest a Savage..

Re: First 22 rifle?
I have had a Rem. 597 and still have a 10/22. Still have my 10/22 cause i was having problems with the 597 cycling certain types of ammo. i haven't found anything yet my Ruger wont cycle...... just my Two cents as far as semi-auto's go

Re: First 22 rifle?
All of the above are good suggestions, but you should also consider a good lever gun (Browning BL-22, Marlin 39A, any of the recent Henry lever guns, for instance). They are rifles you can buy once and have for the rest of your life, and your kids' lives.

Re: First 22 rifle?
I have seen hundreds of 22lr on the line at appleseeds, I have seen the good and bad of nearly every 22 made.
The 10/22 is the best if.........You put a new barrel on it, bed the stock, fix the screw that holds the stock on, and get a trigger kit, then and only then will it hang with a Marlin 795
. Sorry folks I know you 10/22 guys don't want to hear that and will refuse to believe it, but that is based on seeing so many run hard and long for accuracy.
The Marlin 795 out of the box will shoot better then a 10/22 with a green mountain barrel, and they can often be had for 150 bucks.

The Marlin 795 and the Marlin 60. I have both and like both with the Marlin 60 (blue with wood stock) being my favorite of the two.

First 22 rifle?
I have a 10/22, a bolt Savage, a lever 39a and little Stevens single shot and I agree with Coachf 100%...Coachf wrote:10/22. You'll get tired of the bolt action and want to spray lead. 10/22. They can be as accurate as any goto action. You can go wood, tactical, far out, whatever. 10 lb trigger pull sure! 1 lb trigger pull sure! Versatile. Wicked good.

10/22. If you want cheap bolt that's good, Savage. If you're looking for one for the kiddo, you can't beat the Cricket. If you want to spend some money on a bolt, the Ruger 77/22 is where it's at.

If you have too much money and want to play Lego Rifle, a 10/22 is your rifle. If you want value, get a Remington or Marlin and use the savings to buy a set of Tech Sights and ammo.

Re: First 22 rifle?
I want to add a suggestion that you not get sucked into the coolness of an AR7 for your first gun. The concept is awesome but they are not comfortable to hold and crank out 500 rounds at the range. Also, if you don't want an auto, you might consider a Henry. Lever guns are retro-kewl!!
First 22 rifle?
Ar7 was my first rifle and 22. I still have it and the box it came in. I loved shooting it and even had scope for it. I could hit anything my friend and his marlin could. With the options today I would just get a 1022. My friend and I were always hanging out near water so I felt I could recover the ar7 if I dropped it in.

Re: First 22 rifle?
It's either Walmart or Bass Pro that has occasional rebates to bring the price down below $100. Usually a $25 rebate on a $124.99 rifle, I believe. Ask Gundoc, he can help you out.
To add on to the Lever guys, the most enjoyable to shoot .22lr I've ever fired was a Winchester 94/22. They are NOT cheap, but they are fun and shoot extremely well. In my hands, it was the most accurate .22lr I've fired as well.

Remington 597 at PSA on sale:
http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.ph ... arrel.html
For rebate info go to the company website for whichever brand you are thinking of buying. When I bought my Marlin 795 they (Marlin) were offering a $25 rebate so the total purchase came in under $115.
A lot of people have and will recommend the Ruger 10/22. I will be honest and say I've never fired one but have handled them (both wood stock and synthetic stock models). For me the Marlin 60 has a much better feel.

Re: First 22 rifle?
Okay, I have been convinced. I should get either a Marlin or a Savage - so here is the question: should I get a:
Bolt action or a semi-auto: ie, do I get a:
(Semi-auto) Marlin 60 vs Savage 64
Or do I get a:
Marlin XT22-vs Savage mark II
Bearing in mind that I lean towards bolt and hardwood stock? (admitting that before voting begins that my favorite in looks is the Marlin and that I would prefer a magazine fed, not tube fed rifle, but that my primary criteria is accuracy out of the box)?

Re: First 22 rifle?
Marlin 795 fits that bill. If you want a bolt action that is a tack driver try to find an older Marlin (Model 25 I think... you will need to Google it). They used to make some specifically for the Boy Scouts to train accuracy shooting with. Had a longer barrel, maybe 20"? Not sure if the new Marlin bolt 22's are as accurate, or as purdy, but my dad found one not too long ago at a pawn shop and that freakin' thing, stock, will make one hole easily at 25 yards. Sweet trigger too, all stock. You should look 'em up and I am sure someone with more historical knowledge of these will chime in here. It is magazine feed too, and not tube fed.hermes418 wrote:Okay, I have been convinced. I should get either a Marlin or a Savage - so here is the question: should I get a:
