Stripped hole

Post by GeminiXD9 » Thu Oct 10, 2013 10:48 pm

I stripped the hole for the stock screw on my 10/22. Any fixes for that? I'm sure I'm not the first idiot to do that

How badly is it stripped? Like you cross threaded the start of it or you stripped it all the way through. Did the screw take the damage or the hole? Is it old or newer?

It's a newer one. The hole is stripped out. Guessed my dumb ass over tightened it. The screw will bite a little bit but I can pop the barrel/receiver out of the stock if the barrel band isn't on

The assembly still sits in the stock fairly tight and with the band on there's no issue. Prolly wouldn't be an issue shooting either. Just irks me more than anything

Options are helicoil kit, or drill out and tap for next size up. Easy fix. Sounds scary. I'd just buy a kit and tap it or pay some one to tap it to next size up.

Try a little Teflon tape and some Loctite.

In aluminum a key lock insert is what I would use instead of a spring insert.
If you drill /tap to a bigger screw , you will need a new screw and to open up the clearance
hole
And turn down the screw head to fit the counter bore in stock.

"Stripped hole"

Time to find a new GF
There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

Also a couple of form-a-thread products that may work but I doubt it.

Drill it out just a little, clean it VERY good. Use a metal product like JBweld in the hole and then retap it to the right thread. No more stress than that has on it, it should work good. It's an easy fix.

Ugh no JB Weld is a glue
Not a metal substitute
JB has limited shear strength.
Screw threads contact a threaded hole over 70 percent without a solid substrate JB would get pulled away from the wall of the drilled out hole.
If that is the idea then use the JB to glue action to the stock
It would hold better

I used that as an example, not what I would choose either but seems to be only liquid metal like product that the average person knows. It will harden and thread. Have done it a few times unfortunately...haha

Think I'll try to re thread it. Get a size up screw and see how that works

#12 are the biggest number size
So next is 1/4
I do believe a 1/4-20/28 SHCS would work
