Hope there's good wood under there
That's what she said
Anyways...
Since it has rained all weekend I decided to knock out a stock refinish project I've been wanting to do. Take a Marlin 925M with the typical sprayed on walnut orange crap finish that is less than exciting and hope the wood underneath is presentable. In case you haven't seen the wonderful factory stain on basic Marlin rimfire stocks.
Dunno if all their wood is this "decent" or I got lucky. Coated it a few times with paint stripper and sanded as I went to get that factory shit off.
Went with a gunstock color stain and lightly rubbed in two coats. The wood was surprisingly tight and I ended up finish sanding with only 220grit. There are some rough spots but I wasn't really going for a presentation heirloom, just wanted it to be better than it started. Had planned on using True Oil finish but ended up using their gunstock wax. Turned out way better than I had expected using this method.
Once I got it outside I realized how light the stain actually was but I'm still happy with the results. Deserves a better photoshoot one of these days but for now the finished project.

It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters. - Daniel WebsterMexican Kerry wrote:Except for Viv. Very nice! You got a nice piece of wood to work with. In my experience, the nicer the wood starts out, the less you really need to do to it to make a nice stock.
Well done!
Well done!
