Cheap 870 gets a ghetto camo job

Post by Mexican Kerry » Fri Oct 19, 2012 3:16 am

I bought an old 870 Wingmaster a year or two ago, cheap price and I figured it couldn't hurt to have a buddy gun or a backup. My virtually new Ruger Red Label pretty much completed its self-destruction a couple weeks ago so now I'm stuck using this old sewer pipe for birds.

Particulars: basic Wingmaster from the old days, 'smith i bought it from opened up the full choke to modified and did a so-so job of converting it to take 3" shells. With some tweaking it now functions fine and since I'm a lousy hunter I figured I need all the help I can get in the field. Out comes the masking tape and Krylon camo line of paint.

Here is where I'm at after multiple tedious coats of various colors.

Its not how I planned, I'm trying for a shadow grass or marshy-type pattern. Not working out so far, its way too dark for the areas I waste my time in. One more try after this to see if I can get some kind of blendable camo scheme happening. Right now its got a sort of "woodland grass" thing going on.

Now just do some striped dusting with a lighter green and a lighter khaki. It'll be fiiiine.

We'll see. plan is to put down some more "grass" over the multi color base and spray it so I get rid of the deep shades.

the best grass type paint jobs I have seen were donr with a small brush. The guy went all Bob Ross on it and diped the brush in various colors so that each stroke produced an oil painting type blade of grass that was better then anything else I have seen.

I had never heard of Bob Ross until just now. He makes me feel a whole lot better about it, its just a happy little accident, its my shotgun and it doesn't matter. But I'm not going to caress or make love to it.

Was cleaning up in the shop this morning and found this shotgun under a pile of junk on the workbench. I never did finish it and never put it back together. I think I found most of the parts and am working on undoing the horrible paint on it.

Kinda done. Could do more, maybe some day. Cut to 20" and installed brass bead. Still need to refinish fore end. Never going to be a safe queen, when the previous owner altered it for 3" he did a hack job. It works but not pretty.
