New S&W 586.........SPOILER ALERT: It broke

I saved some money, and sold some stuff to get this. I've been wanting one since they reintroduced them last year. Had it on layaway, and picked it up yesterday. I got about 20 rounds through it. I don't lnow if it was the gun or ammo, but it's broke.

That's really odd. The firing pin extending through the bushing is strange enough, but it appears as if the cartridge rim really hammered the recoil shield.

What were you shooting in it?

I shot a cylinder full of 38 smwc, it was shooting low and I adjusted the rear sight, then I readjusted 'cause I realized I turned it the wrong way. We shot another couple cylinders of 38, I looked it over, then we loaded it up with some 357. kyswede shot the first, (and last LOL) cylinder of 357 out of it. The 357 were 158grn jhp. The cylinder seemed to hang up on him once, he opened it up and had a look at it, closed it up and finished it off, but it was rough to open (because the firing pin was hanging out). The pin punched through the primer on the last round. That 357 just did it in, I don't know what to else to say. The marks on the breech face?/recoil shield almost look like the star was dragging against when it was turning, but maybe it just slammed into it.

Never mind, that doesn't make sense, the ejector star doesn't even touch there. I guess it kinda looks cartridge rims were dragging over the recoil shield while the cylinder was turning. The star still looks kinda chewed up though.

I've never seen that kind of damage on a new pistol before. It's almost as if the metal just liquefied and ran. It also looks like the frame has a crack in it near the hammer in the first photo. I would like to know what S&W will have to say about it.

You should thank your lucky stars that it didn't come apart in your hand.

Unlikely, IMHO, as the only parts affected are the frame, the firing pin, and the bushing, none of which are MIM.

I *think* we may simply be seeing evidence of what happens when a high-pressure round vents a lot of very hot gas in the wrong direction.

Wow, Dude talk about a huge letdown, I honestly may have cried. Looks like the Primer may have not been seated as deep as it should of been. Its always a risk when you play with guns, good thing you can just send it back.

That's a pierce primer / over pressure

That"flow" is the gas effect cutting

Well I didn't cry, but only because there was other people there LOL. I sulked about for about 5 minutes, and then I just thought, "well, shit happens". It was a nice day, and we were shooting outside, I didn't want to let it ruin my day. kyswede had a lot of nice old rifles and a 357 he was gracious enough to let me shoot, my shoulder thanks you by the way.
son of liberty I see you're in carrollton, I actually got the pistol at Glaubers on Friday, I looked at the receipt today, and they gave me the wrong person's receipt. I called the person who's receipt I had today to see if he had mine, no such luck.

Guncrank do you think it needs a new ejector and to be re-timed? Would that have anything to do with the malfunction?

I know it's gonna need a new firing pin, spring, and firing pin bushing at the very least, but I wonder if it needs a new frame. It seems the gases eroded the area around the firing pin bushing, particularly around the top

Return it to S&W they will determine what it needs
And repair it

I'm gonna contact S&W tomorrow, we'll see what they have to say.

Go to glaubers and tell them about the recipt, they should have a copy they can print you out. It may help with the S&W warranty service though I do not know the details of how they work. I would tell you to send it back, dont fix it yourself , send it back, Its my understanding that it will take forever and a day but send it back anyway.
