New to me S&W

Post by Mexican Kerry » Mon Oct 22, 2012 10:41 pm

Just arrived today, been waiting for one of these for a looong time.

Might have a problem though. When I was inspecting it after opening the parcel (sitting on the couch pretending to be Harry Callahan) I noticed a ring in the barrel right about where the under lug ends. Is this a cause for concern, or is that an acceptable "flaw" in the manufacturing? Anyone ever seen this?

No, its visible if the right light hits it. Outside only, can't see evidence of it on the inside either.

Ok I guess you Chanoks are not used to the long tubes in your hands.

You can handle all the long tubes in your hands that you want Cranky. One difference between me and you: I might handle MY tube, but you handle everybody's! haha

Haha! One thing I noticed after looking at it more closely, its not a "bulge" outwards, but the ring looks like the od of the barrel gets smaller at that point. And it seems to go all the way around the rounded part of the barrel. Then back to the larger od beyond the ring. I'm stumped.

It looks good. Those grips alone are sweet and worth quite a bit in themselves. I also have a Smith .44 magnum but mine is in nickel.

Yup, they're awesome grips. Have another set for my 17-3. Pricey, but worth it.

Change of plans. If I cut this barrel down, I'm going to 5". And I'm buying back my 5" 27.

The barrel was forged out and then machined so that could be just the marking of that barrel.

Change of plans, I'm going with a 4.5" barrel.

Taped off in case my saw slips (like when I cut my 17-3)

No turning back now. Start squaring it up and working on the crown tomorrow.
