Debate RIA VS TAURUS

Post by RecoilSensitive » Fri Sep 07, 2012 7:29 pm

Ok I am looking at 2 1911's
I want something for home defense and range use not a primary carry

RIA gi full sized can get for about 380 used

Taurus 1911b-1 this has a rail on it which would be a nice thing for a light
I can have this with some upgrades for 475 to 5 in great condition

This will be my first full sized and I know there are expensive options I just don't have the cash for them.

Both are going to have a lot of MIM parts, no way around it at that price. But Taurus has the advantage I think because the entire gun is made in house by Taurus. They have a better handle on QC with each part where, as I understand it, RIA (and many other lower end 1911 makers) contracts out for many of the parts and then assembles them in the factory.

Whatever you end up with, buy quality after market mags and put aside or sell your factory ones. You have eliminated a lot of problems just by doing that.

The RIA I had would bite the web of my hand. Other than that it was a great gun. Just needed a larger beaver tail.

Metal Injection Molding. IIRC the Ruger SR1911 has MIM parts in it as well some other well known manufacturers.

God made man.
Samuel Colt made all men equal.
John M. Browning and the 1911 made some men more equal than others.

RIA is built on the origional Colt equipment, Taurus has Taurus only parts in it. I've fired both, I've owned a couple Taurus. Fit and finish on the RIA is amazing for such a cheap firearm. It's RIA in my oppinion, especially if you feel like throwing some aftermarket in it later on down the road.

Kimber uses MIM parts as well. I can actually say that MIM parts have failed on me. Three Kimber thumb safeties have broke, eventually Kimber replaced it with a non MIM part and it's been fine since. If you are going to trust your life to a 1911, I would personally toss the MIM parts and replace them with higher quality parts. At least the slide stop with something like the Ed Brown HardCore or Wilson Combat BulletProof.
