Buying a New Pistol

Post by Mexican Kerry » Sat Dec 19, 2015 8:37 am

Waiting on some better pictures from the seller, I was actually going to sell him some USGI parts to restore it but I guess he decided not to. The price is right so I'll do it myself. It needs the sights changed to make it correct and it looks like a decent condition mid-war pistol. The Rands don't seem to command as high a price as Colts, but are a great way to get into a wartime M1911A1.

This one is a Type 3, one of 138,000+ made in 1944.

Total M1911A1 production:

Rem Rand: 752,751

Ithaca: 335,467

Colt: 576,075? These numbers overlap with other manufacturers' serial numbers so I may be off on the Colt production.

Singer: 500

US&S: 55,000

Easy to see why the Rands, Colts and Ithacas are the most accessible to purchase.

Its a high serial number, 2,148,006 which puts it as a 1945 manufacture. It also has a Mount Rainier Ordnance Depot stamp on it, which means it takes a hit in value. It appears to be all original/correct but the fact that it has been stamped devalues it. It probably never saw wartime action, as many of the Rands in this range never got issued before the war ended.

My rand is 1324870, one difference is has the abbreviation "No" in front of the serial. I love the history - feel like i am doing my small part to preserve it.

I love your collection :)

Mine has the "No" marking too, but it was struck fairly lightly and partly obliterated when the MR was stamped. Its almost impossible to see with the naked eye, much like the crossed cannons ordnance stamp. Yours is late '43 production? I'd like to see it if you'd post a pic or two.

Forgot about this. Update: the deal fell through. Dude decided to keep it. On the down side, I just sold one of my Springfields.

I know of one Singer that sold for 170,000 in 2010. That was an auction, the value may have been driven up by people with too much money on their hands. But collectible gun values have risen.....
