What the F@{K?!

Post by Niceguy » Fri May 01, 2015 7:25 pm

Alright 1911 gurus...Got me a new threaded barrel and something is not fitting right. When I slide the slide assembly in the frame all is good. Slide goes back and forth as it should. After I put the pin in the side of it, the slide lacks going forward enough to lock the safety on by about 3/16 of an inch. What's not fitting right or what am I doing wrong? I tried it a could of times and with same issue and then with the original barrel and all is good.

My guess would be the problem is in the locking lugs or the link. Without the slide stop inserted there is enough wiggle in the system for the slide/barrel to lock up.

There are darn few "drop in" 1911 parts, and the barrel ain't one of them. Get thee to a gunsmith.

It fits really nice without the slide stop in it. Not loose, not tight. It feels just like it does with the factory barrel. I can't see how that pin can make that big of difference. 3/16 of an inch is a lot. Not saying your not right, just crazy that something like that would change it that much.

Yup, what frailer said. Sounds like a geometry issue with the locking lugs and the barrel link

It's common for the top and bottom lugs of replacement barrels to be made slightly oversized to permit fitting to ensure solid lock-up. This isn't a job for the faint of heart.

I'll do anything to my Glocks, and I'm comfortable doing some revolver work, but if anything designed by John Moses Browning requires tinkering I take it to a gunsmith friend.

Cranky has my 1911 getting threaded barrel fitted. I would suggest doing the same.

Isn't this what I said when you asked the question a couple days ago?
