C-Products 1911 magazines

Post by kyswede » Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:07 pm

I ordered 5 of these from Aim Surplus, tried them in my RIA 1911 GI. Only 1 would click in place, but when slide went forward magazine fell out. I filed the notch in the mags until they clicked in place with a solid click. However you can pull the mags out of the pistol if you wiggle them a bit. Has anyone else tried these mags? I only paid $11 each, and I can't return them after modifying them. :(

Ive had good luck with their AR mags but never tried any of their other stuff.

Have you tried calling them directly?

I haven't called Aim or C-Products yet. I am more interested in finding out if anyone else had this problem and how they solved it. I took a gamble buying the mags and don't mind modifying them to make them work.

Did you compare the mag catch notch to any other mags? it sounds like they are cut too low and the mags are seating high in the frame. if not, then maybe the feed lips themselves are wrong, bent high or something causing them to be struck by the slide's forward motion. As for the mag dropping clear, it sounds like there isn't a very positive lock with the mag catch. Could be the catch itself or an imperfection in the clearancing you did.

Other mags still work fine? Did you pull the mag catch itself to inspect for damage?

My pistol came with 1 mag and it works fine. I measured the width of the notches and the distance from the notch to the back of the magazine, compared to factory mag. I used digital calipers, have worked in machine shops for 30 years. When I push the modified mags in, there is a loud click as the mag catch engages. I will try them with the slide removed to see if the feed lips could be the problem. I have been testing the mags empty.

I wasn't suggesting you did a poor job. I'm no expert, was just trying to think of all the variables that could be at work here. Hell, I could be completely out to lunch on this.

I only have this one 1911 so I can't try the mags in another pistol. Guess that is reason enough to buy another one. :llama:

I have been messing with the mags this evening and may have problem solved. i removed the slide from my pistol and 4 out of 5 mags lock in tight, 1 you can still pull out. I compared the height of the feed lips of the factoiry mag in the pistol to the C-Product mags. The C mags' feed lips are about .030" higher than the factory mag. They were most likely rubbing the bottom of the slide, putting downward pressure on mag. I will carefully remove some material from the feed lips of one mag tomorrow and see if it helps. By the way, these are supposed to be 8 round mags, but 1 mag would only hold 7 rounds. I traded its spring with the spring out of the mag that won't lock in. It now holds 8 rounds.

Well, it seems the problem is not with the mags, but with my mag catch. Selleck tried the mags in his Springer today and they worked fine. It appears my mag catch does not protrude far enough into the magwell to lock the mags. I will try to get a mil-spec mag catch and go from there. Thanks for all the advice guys.

UPDATE
I got a Wilson Combat mag catch, lock and spring from Midway USA. After a little fitting, the new mag catch works great. And the C-Products mags lock in just fine.
