3D printed 1911
This is not new tech, but the fact that we can 'print' guns is making it sexy and news-worthy I suppose.
Lot's of Ed Brown parts are designed on a computer then milled on a machine and have been for years. Same with a lot of metal parts fabricated from a block of steel, aluminum, titanium or whatever.

Re: 3D printed 1911
The article I just read on it.

3D printing is the new hot thing, and doing it all in metal is interesting...
Countdown to libtards losing their mind over this....3...2...1.......

Re: 3D printed 1911
Yeah, I'll be really interested to see how many rounds it's good for and what fails first. They only have 50 through it now. They just posted that they plan on putting another 500 through it over the weekend.

Think this will hurt the custom firearm industry? Instead of going to a smith, you head over to the CAD

Isnt that really what a milling machine is these days (well the fancy ones at least) just plug in a computer program and mill the item.Toecutter1978 wrote:Think this will hurt the custom firearm industry? Instead of going to a smith, you head over to the CAD

Re: 3D printed 1911
Until the price drops, I doubt that the firearms industry will disappear.
And not all firearm parts are just plain steel , there are heat treated parts.
As for CNC that is not just a "drop in part" either
You really need to have some understanding of machining. And what you are trying to make.
And the little CNC mill that will "revolutionize " the world is itself made out of plastic and uses .125 sized cutting tools and is only a little bigger than a shoe box
When you can go to the panel on the wall and say
"Earl Gray hot and 1500 rounds of 5.56"
Firearms themsevles will be obsolete.

Re: 3D printed 1911
They said in the video that the machine used to make this is upwards of a half million dollars and takes some experts to use. In the future this tech could e useful for some things but it still has a way to go before building a gun like this is really practical IMO. Like I said, I'll be very interested to see how many rounds the gun is good for.

Well not generally a drop in and forget but once the design is set and the machine starts running the program, it doesn't take an engineer to watch it.guncrank1 wrote: As for CNC that is not just a "drop in part" either

Did Cranky just make a Star Trek reference?guncrank1 wrote:When you can go to the panel on the wall and say

Never took the Crankster for a Trekie.

Re: 3D printed 1911
3D printers use a roll of plastic and melt it to build up layers for the part made.
A metal printing lazer , I suppose uses a block of sintering material to heat/melt/fuse/cut the part out.
IMI uses the same material to molded the part in a injection mold.

Not a Trekkie , happen to have watched more than one episode of the several tv shows based on Star Trek and just maybe watched every freature film, either at movie theater or on TV.scorpionmain wrote:Did Cranky just make a Star Trek reference?guncrank1 wrote:When you can go to the panel on the wall and say
