Decisions decisions...
Hopefully by the weekend, ideally today I would like to pick up a small carry gun. 3 guns really interest me.
9mm Shield, I loved my M&P9 and 9c and like the size and shootablity of the Shield.
XDs.45, I like the size and feel of quality and I like the .45 round. Never owned a XD of any kind and the whole way that Springfield handled the recall was RIDICULOUS. That makes me wonder how any future issues would be handle if it were to have any.
Lastly a shielded hammer 38/357 snubby revolver. I love the simplicity! .38/357 seems to be a pretty nasty round even out of the short barrel.
What do you guys and gals think I should lean towards and why? Any others I should take a look at?

I think you should get the one that's the most comfortable to wear. They are all great weapons.

Re: Decisions decisions...
exactly. get what you will wear everyday and will practice with.
357 performance out of a 2in barrel are about equal to 380 from a 4" barrel (velocity and terminal ballistics). +P would be better but I would not want to shoot a small 357 revolver with +P in it and I bet you don't either.

Unfortunately I don't have the funds to pick them all up and keep what works and I think that's the only way I could tell that.

Re: Decisions decisions...
There is no way I'd go with a snub revolver. You already castrate yourself with capacity. By going with a snub barrel you loose the effectiveness of the magnum round. Not to mention you still have magnum recoil and muzzle flash but none of the terminal benifits. And btw revolvers are far from simple designs. I think Glocks have less moving parts than revolvers.

I shot Dustin's with .357 5rds a KAC shoot or two ago and it sucked! haha My trigger finger was sore for a week! I did appreciate the chance to shoot it though.ChopperDoc wrote:exactly. get what you will wear everyday and will practice with.

I'd also consider that shooting hollow points from short barrels is a gamble on whether they will expand and stop. And since all the guns you are interested in are low capacity, I'd go with the xds. 45. At least with that you are poping .45 caliber holes even if the hollow points don't open up and the velocity will be lower so over penitration won't be as bad when the hp's don't expand.

Re: Decisions decisions...
I have a 642 Airweight. It's not even all that fun to shoot .38 +P out of, can't imagine .357 in the same size. It doesn't get carried really now that the XDS .45 is back. Both are similar in size and both will fit in a pocket, with the 642 being a bit easier I pocket carry due to the shape. The XDS is a little thinner. With the 642 I have 5 rounds of .38 +P that I'm not very accurate with and is cumbersome to carry extra ammo for and slow I reload. With the XDS I have 6 rounds of .45 that I am very accurate with and 14 more rounds quickly accessible in two spare mags on my hip.
No matter how much I shoot the little revolver I can't get it to group for shit. Recoil from its lack of weight/long trigger pull/tiny "sights" all contribute. With the XDS the recoil is very manageable, the trigger is very nice and the sights are easy to see. I can put 5 rounds into one jagged hole at 20', all 5 as fast as I can pull the trigger group at about the size of a grapefruit at the same distance.

Re: Decisions decisions...
442/642 are 38spl and the 340 is 357. But any J frame smith is a good choice. I carry a 360PD daily.niceguyr6 wrote:Seems like an sweet carry gun but damn that thing's expensive. What is the $300+ benefit over the 442/642?Dustin wrote:S&W 340

Re: Decisions decisions...
My first XD anything and maybe the first XD I ever shot! I just came back in from shooting 50rds of .230gr Blazer aluminum (its freaking cool and wet and I didn't feel like picking up my brass...haha) and it ran flawless! Very manageable for a small .45. I like it! It is slick as shit with all the factory lube all over it and still not bad to hold onto.

Re: Decisions decisions...
Thanks! Can't wait until it's dry and I can poke some holes in paper and tell exactly where I'm hitting. I'm out of spray paint to spray my plates with and couldn't tell for sure where I was hitting. Lots of fresh marks from Sunday.
Re: Decisions decisions...
You picked the best choice by far.
I own a 340M&P revolver and have owned an XDs as well. Along with most of the other choices you mentioned. The XDs is the best for carrying I think. You get a small, light pistol that is .45 caliber and will do damage. I LOVE my .357 snub but in all honesty the XDs is a better carry gun in my opinion. You did well.

Re: Decisions decisions...
Sweet! That's what I like to hear... I think so too. Shoots very nice for such a small .45. Really took me by surprise how manageable it is. I expected it to be a bitch to hang on too. Also give HUGE props to Derrick at River City Firearms, really great guy and shop to deal with! Great price on the gun and extremely nice person to deal with. I'll definitely be doing more business with him...

Re: Decisions decisions...
The Kahr PM9 and S&W 442 are my carry stable. I use Hornady critical defense in both. I have no qualms about 38 special. I would rather have that than .380.
