Winchester 94 AE

Post by RedRocker » Sun Sep 08, 2019 10:28 am

Help, what do I have?
I recently acquired this pretty lever gun and I’m struggling with determining whether it’s a Ranger Compact, a Trapper, or something else.

Here’s some specs:
16” barrel, 30-30
Cross bolt safety
34.25 overall length
13.5 length of pull
Does NOT have a saddle ring

My best internet investigation led me to the following information:

OAL and LOP suggests it’s a Trapper
Trapper’s have a saddle ring, mine doesn’t
The only other 16” 94 I’ve found is the Ranger Compact
Ranger Compact has a 12.5” LOP and 33.25” OAL

Can’t find anything similar on gun broker, KyGunCo, or Buds for comparison.

The closest SN reference suggests my 94 was manufactured in or around 1992.

Here’s a few pics.

The person I got it from says it’s a Ranger Compact. I’d still like confirmation tho.

Not sure about Ranger Compact, but cooler than a cat with 2 tails. Nice get!

On further research, the Ranger Compact had the tang safety. The crossbolt AE puts it as a carbine 20" barrel probably cut down to 16 1/4" after market. I've had 2 leverguns cut down by Cranky in the past. One a 30/30 another in 45/70. Both look and perform wonderfully. Check out the crown closely, should be rounded outside and inside to the bore. Still an awesome cowboy assault rifle! Made 1992-2002. Geno

Here’s the crown. Looks rounded to me.
