Century CETME.. need some advice!
hey guys I found a century arms CETME for a decent price and trying to decide if I should buy it or not.. I know some of these are prone to problems so I don't wanna buy a POS.. I'm not looking for a PTR91 out of it but I need to know WHAT to look for and how to check it out before I hand cash over to someone. I know one of the big issues is the gap.. how do I check this? what else should I look for one it? thanks!

Re: Century CETME.. need some advice!
The Trigger pull was beyond bad, I shoot a stock AR15 trigger and actually find it to be very nice, the Cetme felt like a staple gun and not a very good one at that. The Recoil was excessive for a 308 , not so much the felt recoil but the gun itself felt violent. The brass is not reloadable due to the fluted chamber, something about having to flute a chamber to make the rifle function seems like a poor practice. The charging handle is it a bad spot you gotta reach way to far forward. The accuracy was poor on the few I have shot, I did shoot one that was OK but it had nearly its cost again in custom work.
For myself if I'm going to pay more for ammo such as I would 308, I want it to make the best use of that money spent, I demand more accuracy then the Cetme and PTR are capable of without a huge investment.

Re: Century CETME.. need some advice!
I had both a CETME and a PTR.
I put all HK parts in the CETME that would interchange and it shot really well. The trigger was decent and i had no issues what so ever. I paid $250 for mine from Centerfire in 2002 and put another $150 into the gun to get it to run right.
I bought a first gen PTR in 2007 and it was built like a champ
The new PTR s are garbage.
When looking at the CETME, make sure the bolt has not been ground down and pay no more then $550.

CETME can be improved with a little polishing and stoning
And yes it is turd , but can be improved except the fluted chamber

I traded for a CETME when I first came to Louisville and got it at Shooters Supply. I traded an HK USP .40 with three mags for a CETME and 40 rounds of ammo. I still have the two boxes of ammo as a reminder of what a dumb ass I was for trading my HK for a CETME.
RUN.. Don't Walk..away from a CETME. They kick like a mule and take all kinds of tweaking to shoot a 60 rounds without a malfunction. NOT WORTH IT. You have been warned.........

If looking for a 308 semi rifle for less than $1,000 I would look at FALs. Only trouble there is there's a million and one configurations to deal with. Ergonomics and over all balance (depending on config) are way above what you're going to find with a CETME.
After that you're looking at AR-10s and M1As which both are going to start higher, in many cases a lot higher.

There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

I have one and she's a beauty. Fluted camber doesn't hurt brass, it's the ejection smacking the rifle on the way to orbit.
Easy recoil...LOUD report. Mine's a stainless receiver...the best. Never a problem and I have thousands of .308 from a few years back at $.08 a round.
Check head space: Cock and dry fire gun. Slip a feeler gauge between bolt and chamber face via the magazine space from under the rifle.
