New Mossberg rifle

Post by Mudcat » Sun Mar 03, 2013 7:56 pm

Picked up this little rifle today, Mossberg MVP 20" fluted barrel, put a Nikon P223 3-9x40 on it. Got it sighted in today with 5 rounds, first 5 shot group was just under an inch at 100 yards. I didn't even try anything, 69grn Sierra HPBT over 24 grns of IMR 4895, averaged 2853 over my chrono. Good enough for now, I am planning on shooting it at the March 23 500 yard Appleseed. Will be plenty accurate for that. Rifle has a nice trigger out of the box but I admittedly am not a trigger aficionado, I like mil spec triggers. The bolt is a little clunky, but I had already read that. I is not something that is real bad and it may smooth out a little with some dry fire and range time.Image

These are shooting with just a sling no rest prone.Image

Ive got a mossy 4x4 in 30.06. One of.the smoothest rifles ive shot out of the box. If they have.the same trigger, give it 50 rounds or so

The trigger is more than acceptable for me it is the bolt action that is a little rough. Seems like when the bolt is lifted it has a very noticeable clunk and notch almost when the firing pin is reset. It is also a little stiff when it has a loaded magazine in it to move back an forth. This seems to be a common mention about this rifle and I knew it before I bought it. It is more than serviceable just not as smooth as some of my other rifles. Just giving a little feedback on it. We shot right at 150 rounds through it today and it is either getting better or it is becoming less of an issue. I will get some time behind it again this next weekend then run it through its paces during the 500 yard event on the 23rd.

I read some where that Mossbrg is thinking or is going to put that platform out in 308 cal sometime soon. I like the Patrol version that came out this year. Been wanting a scout rifle for awhile now, can't find GSR by Ruger anywhere.

I am ordering a 300 Blackout barrel for it. I have heard the same rumbling about a .308 version but to be honest that doesn't interest me though I see where it could others. I wonder which magazine it will use?

Where did you pick this up? I'd like to handle one of these. I hear there is a 24" version. Was it selling for less than retail?
