Practical Application of Bolt Guns
Practical Application of Bolt Guns
I've got the itch for one in .308. Beyond the scope of hunting, what are some practical way to utilize a bolt action rifle at "go time"? Given the prevalence of AR and AK pattern weapons, it seems to be a role-spcific platform these days. I ask because most of my collection was purchased for the sake of collecting, and few have been used for anything except blasting paper. With money getting tighter and tighter, I'm only looking for tools, not toys.

Well there is a reason the military likes .308 for its bolt guns. I think the saying is turning cover into concealment. Basically with the right ammo your can shoot through shit and still hit the target. So in a SHtF scenario you can precisely take out targets at great distances even through cover.

Not to mention being able to stand off at range and prevent getting a face full of enemy.

Re: Practical Application of Bolt Guns
Bolt guns have two purposes outside of hunting. The first is to be used as a precision weapon to take out a target at greater distance than your primary weapon system is capable of. The second is to be used in an over watch position so you can watch the assaults elements back and if need be suppress the enemy.
... Now the important part, the shooter must have the knowledge and skill to implement that weapon system other wise it might as well be that cool toy you show off to your buddies.

And it does not have to be a "tactical " rifle

Re: Practical Application of Bolt Guns
Today I was able to sight in my Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. Thanks DBH. Open sights first , then Weaver scout scope. Really nice for what it is designed for. Sounds like an answer to the OP's question. Good to think on, nonetheless. Geno

Re: Practical Application of Bolt Guns
The Bolt action rifle offers great accuracy on a tight budget. My opinion is that bolt actions should be for fun or to run the rounds to extreme for autoloaders. I dont think 308 is that great a round though popular, its effective range is well inside the capability of modern autoloaders. Some of the more exotic rounds such as 300 RUM, 338 RUM, 338 Laupa, 408 Chytac, rounds pushing beyond 1500 meters, these belong in Bolt guns.

So how did you like that weaver scout scope and what was the magnification, model type, eye relief and such. Also how did you mount it to the rail or in other words ring height and such. Been thinking about pulling the trigger that same set up looking for some info.
