BEST CALIBER FOR DEER

Post by Nolan » Sun Aug 26, 2012 9:29 am

need thoughts on bullets for deer--I have a 30.06 and 7MM Rem Mag--need lighter yet flat shooting bullet for deer from range of 50 to 200 yards--do not want to use my AR--thinking .243--any ideas?? :?

Use what you have, both are well up to most any range you will find here in KY.

If you just want another rifle a 243 would be a good choice. Reduced recoil ammo for the 06 is another idea.

If you really want another caliber to try out....I say 270 or 308

I know you and you'll never be happy with a 243.....no way it'll live up to your standards for a deer gun, lmao...

.270 looking good right now then again I might just use my AR and go 5.56 on that deer ass

After years of deer hunting, my favorite round is the .270
The .270 has never disappointed me at all.

Seriously, another rifle is completely unnecessary. Either of the rifles you have will take care of things juuuust fine, believe me.

If you just want to get a new rifle because you want a new rifle, necessity be damned and get what you want, but there's no reason to.

That said, I would recommend .308 or .270, .308 if you want a fun gun that you'll shoot a lot and .270 if it will be primarily shot during hunting season.

Well, a 50BMG will work for a fawn. But for the big bucks you will need to go with at least 20mm Vulcan. 1600 grains at 3300fps should be a clean kill on the buck of your choice.

unless you hunt somewhere that you can take long shots, a 30-30 will kill anything in the KY woods. its got enough range to cover you too. i've killed more deer with my 30-30 than i care to count. only had to double tap one and thats cause i broke his back with a running shot. it dropped him in his tracks and thesecond shot finished him off.

Nothing like the 30-30 lever, .44 came legal last year in Indiana and lots of people buy those in lever action

Nothing wrong with either calibers you listed. But I'm the last person to advise someone not to buy a new rifle!

.270 Win is my rifle caliber of choice. Decent for various ranges, and little recoil. My 12 yr old son is going on his first hunt this fall using a Ruger M77 .270. But like anything else, there's a lot of options that'll work. For deer or most animals in N. America, you could close your eyes and point at a gun shop and you'd end up with a suitable rifle.

^ This. Kentucky doesn't offer many places where you can get 300+ shots, at least where I live. Thick woods, rolling fields that obstruct line of sight, etc. I've never had to fire twice either.

But I keep eyeing a .308 every now and then...I like big bore but my budget doesn't allow $1 per round.
