What color should my mosin be?

Sanded her down, got rid of the previous owners abomination now she has to be a new color...
what should I do and how should I do it?

The barrel should be deep cherry red with the stock boiling out the cosmoline.

When I refinished mine, I did a red waterborne stain then ebony poly over it. Turned out really nice.
