Safety of using an original PU scope on a Mosin Sniper

Post by Flying_Kat » Tue Dec 09, 2014 8:19 pm

Hey All, Flying_Kat here just had another question regarding PU scopes on Mosin Nagants. It is my understanding that some used leather instead of rubber to seal them since rubber was in short supply in Russia during WW2. If this is true is it safe to use an original PU scope? Can they fall apart?

Yes and no or no and yes.
Sorry but that question can not be answered with any means of saying because you are taking about a item that is almost 100 years old.
It could be OK or you just FUBARed a piece of history.

My professional opinion is DO NOT DO IT.

guncrank I respect your opinion so I think I'll remove the real scope and buy a nice repro like thishttp://kalinkaoptics.com/pu-3-5x22-mili ... -tube.html

Good choice, pricy but at least you get good glass even if it is a poor design.

I mean I'm going for originality over ergonomics, and ease of use. I'm a semi-collector?

ya anything that old can be damaged. Same ways new glass fail except new glass doesnt have the same meaning or value
"But now," he said, "take your money and a traveler's bag. And if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one" -Jesus (Luke 22:36 NLT)
