Running/sprinting workouts

Anyone have any knowledge on if it's better to do sprints before or after the main run workout?
I'm only running 1.5 to 2 miles and only 3 on a long day.
My thinking is I can push harder on the run if I sprint last but would it be better to get good and tired before the run by doing sprints first?
I'd rather see improvements in my 1 mile time than see sprint time improvements.

When I do sprints, I do intervals like Whoots posted. Doing sprints at the beginning hurts my regular run. Doing sprints at the end has minimal gains, since I'm beat from the run. I'm running 4-6 miles at a time; normally I'll run 2 miles out and do intervals back or just a regular 6 mile run somewhere in the 8-9 minute mile area.

Intervals are where it's at. If you want to run faster, you have to practice running faster.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I quit sprinting when I hit 50. Hamstring pulls don't heal *nearly* as fast as they used to.

Thanks for the link. I have done workouts where I'll sprint an 1/8th lap and jog and 1/8th lap alternating for a mile, and I end up doing the overall mile slower. Wasn't sure if I was better off doing a tempo run that is faster and then sprints separately. Make sense? I'm probably over thinking it but summer is winding down and I haven't made the progress that I want to see yet.

The Army uses 30:60's and 60:120's. Sprint short, jog/walk double that time focusing on breathing to recover before giving it everything again.

Yea HIIT training will make you faster. 2x1x2/ so jog 2x a distance then sprint 1x that distance then jog 2x that distance and repeat. You can either use time or distance. Back in the day when I played team sports we always did our sprints at the end.
