Fat guy in a little boat...

As I read all the kayak talk on here and having been thinking about one on and off for quite a while. It has made want to be more serious about getting one. What is your opinions of the best, most stable fat guy (300lbs) boat? Just recreational paddling for some exercise and fun. I don't fish so rod holders and crap like that don't matter. Maybe after I gain a little experience and fitness I would like it to have enough space for my dog (40lb border collie) to come along.

I have no space to store one or I'd already have one. I'm drooling over the Oru Kayak but the price tag makes me cry.

$1200, but it looks like it would fit in a closet.

That's what I was thinking. I don't think I want my 300lb ass in a fold up kayak...haha

I'm not so sure I'd want my 215 pound ass in a collapsible kayak.

Well I run a Riot 13, it has a skeg and cuts through the waves. It's a touring yak, so it sits low in the water. Also, if I was I newb, I would defiantly get one that was bright in color that clashed with the water, for other folks to see you. A water hand pump and a car wash sponge in the cockpit. To remove the water when it gets in, from spray and/or rolls. As for a big guy starting out, if you do have balance, Pelican makes a decent yak and are relativity inexpensive. They can be purchased at Dick's. Invest in waterproof bags and remember EVERYTHING needs to be dummy corded to the yak, even your paddle. That brings up another thing to think about. Your paddle, an adjustable canter will serve you better than a solid fixed paddle, you can adjust for your stroke. Don't go and buy a carbon fiber, they are very light, but the ones I've owned I've broken while pushing off rocks.

Your PFD( personal floatation device) make sure it's rated for your weight. For now, you might just stay on calm water, but do not skimp on this. Quest has a great selection that works perfect with a yak seat and will not get in the way of strokes.

Of you are interested, I could meet up with ya at a few sporting good stores to show you what to look for. Things like the seams on the hull, 2 piece, 1 piece hulls. It will give me an excuse to get out of the house. I would like to offer to let you take my yak out, but till I get the ok from the Doc, I can't put that much strain on my body.

Considered a canoe?

Hard to go wrong with one....u can snatch up all kinds used on Craiglist or the like....Just start cheap...$400 or less will buy a decent one and they never really go out of style, lol....easy to sell later on. There r kind of like a lot of guns....you can read and get all sorts of opinions (which is good) but at the end of the day you don't know what u like until you try a few.

Canoes are easy to get in and out of...hold tons of stuff....easy enough to navigate solo....plenty of room for the dog or a buddy if you wanted company...or that special lady friend, lol....

I may just take you up on that soon Toecutter.

I grew up in a lake front neighborhood and spent a lot of time in a canoe and love them. All of the people I would be paddling with would be in kayaks. It's kinda like riding with a group of friends on sport quads and being on a utility quad. It's still fun but your looking for different things.

Not any of the ones I've been looking at but might just have to hit up Long Run. It's not to far from my house, cool...

I'm kinda picturing me looking like Chris Farely in his little sailboat in Tommy Boy. My fat ass in the boat with the nose of it straight up in the air...haha

Received this email. Wish I could go, but I'm taking my Girl Scouts camping this weekend. Great deals on some sweet yaks.
