Tried a 1rm bench press tonight

Post by justang1997 » Sat Jun 14, 2014 9:36 pm

Snuck into the gym where I work after work today to see what my bench press max was. I haven't done anything with weights for over a year. Just pushups and tire flips and body weight exercises.

I wasn't expecting much. I didn't have a spot so I had to use the squat machine that stabilizes the bar. I warmed up and worked up to putting up 265lbs twice, and ran out of plates to add.

Somethings wrong here. I am not that strong. Google says the 45lb bar in the machine only weighs 10-15 because it's counter balanced. Does that sound right?

Yep most smith machines (bar is on the tracks or counter balanced) the bar weighs anywhere from 15 to 25 lbs. but still if your pushing up 245 from just push-ups and no real sight training the. That is pretty good IMO. I guess is should say if u can bench 100% body weight or more with no weight training then that is good.

I'm skeptical. I figured I'd be at about 200lbs for 1rm max. I got in pushup position on a scale and it said 140lbs was on my hands.

I wish we still had the gym at work. They took it out years ago for liability reasons. (Sorry for the slight derail.)

I'd like a gym membership, but it's too easy to not go. I am short on space at the house for machines.

I would too, but working nights and living in the boonies makes it even easier not to go.
