AMD Paint Removal

Post by tannerss09 » Tue Dec 04, 2012 10:30 am

Friday I am going to pick up an AMD and the owner put a rattle can paint job on it. He said that the original paint was crappy. It doesn't look bad but I'm not wanting it on there. What is the safest method to remove the paint? Also, would you suggest getting it duracoated or cerakoted? Thanks

Should I masked anything off? I've never stripped a gun so I don't want to mess anything up.

Unless there is optics on it, you should be fine. Break cleaner wont hurt anything and it dries rapidly

As DD said unless there is a wood forend , nothing can be damaged.

Duracoat is epoxcy based and Cerrokote is a ceramic based bake on finish.

They are not the same
Dura is good for color applications
Cerrokote wear like iorn but is three times as much cost.

In my shop Dura is the cheapest
Gunkote is middle
Cerrokote is most expensive
Also same for wear and tear.

AMD Paint Removal

I used some kind of citrus based spray can non toxic paint removed when I removed paint from a rattle canned ak. Brake cleaner works fine also but only reason I mention the orange based stuff from lowes is the fumes are very mild and I did it in my living room floor without getting overwhelmed with vapors.

Citristrip: Don't think, use it. I can confirm mild fumes, relatively easy clean up, no need to worry about being hyper-careful with it, etc. It goes on as a liquid, builds into a heavy foam, and just sits. Leave it for a while, and it just lifts the paint right off.

That said, if you're thinking about refinishing it in Duracoat or Cerakote, DON'T STRIP IT and just take it to Armor-Hyde. I swear he is an applied coatings wizard. Let him do everything. If all you want is a rattle can job again, fine, just strip and repaint yourself.

Doublepost

It comes in two forms that I've seen, jug or aerosol can. They look like this:

From stripping a rifle this weekend with brake cleaner, I recommend going with the Citristrip. If your current paintjob is properly applied with decent paint, it might help to scratch up the paint a bit, to give the stripper a way into it.
