Deer hunting with 7.62x39
Anyone here hunted with an AK or SKS? It's legal in KY right? I don't have an assault rifle yet (any) and an AK will probably be my first, I'd like to start hunting this year so if I can use it for that too it would be a plus. Pros/cons?

There are criminals among us who are both homicidal and incorrigible. Their parents took a shot at civilizing them and failed. Their school teachers took a shot at them and failed. The odds are overwhelming that government welfare programs and penal institutions took a shot at them and failed. If it ever becomes your turn to take a shot at them, don’t fail.

I would have no problem deer hunting with my SKS using soft-point ammo, either 124 gr. or 154 gr.

Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
I have seen/known people that deer hunted with an SKS. Usually they put a block in the magwell to hold only 5 rds.
The 7.62X39 is nearly the same as a 30-30 balisticaly.

Its plenty of gun,Its really about shooter skill not the bullet. Can you resist the temptation to take anything but the perfect shot? If you can then anything legal to use in KY is plenty of gun.

Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
I successfully took a handful of whitetail deer over the years with a mini-30. It was fine for scouting areas new to me during hunting season. They were targets of opportunity. From 35 to 70 yards in the woods. Quick and handy and one shot each. None went far. Sold that gun when I started using a 16"barrel Marlin 336 with peep sights. Can't go wrong with either.

Unless I'm mistaken the only rifles legal for deer in Indiana are those chambered for pistol cartridges.WLJ wrote:As long as you use a 10 rd mag or smaller.

Because of alot of flat land areas in Indiana, they didnt want people taking a stray bullit.WLJ wrote:That make a lot of sense, pistol cartridges???????Frailer wrote:Unless I'm mistaken the only rifles legal for deer in Indiana are those chambered for pistol cartridges.WLJ wrote:As long as you use a 10 rd mag or smaller.

Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
I probably missed something. I thought the question was about the 7.62x39 as a hunting round and the original poster is stated as being in Louisville. The IN 5 round limit or KY 10 round limit is "question creep"?

Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
I asked a KFW officer what the round limit was in Ky a few years ago, since I couldnt find it in writing in their manuel. He told me Ky had a 5 round limit as well.Geno wrote:I probably missed something. So can I use a 10 round mag with 5 rounds in it? Or do you have to modify the mag?Toddstang wrote:I asked a KFW officer what the round limit was in Ky a few years ago, since I couldnt find it in writing in their manuel. I heard of people putting blocks of some sort in ten round mags.renovatio wrote:So can I use a 10 round mag with 5 rounds in it? I have always heard it was 5 rounds but when you check the Ky's website it says 10.Toddstang wrote:I asked a KFW officer what the round limit was in Ky a few years ago, since I couldnt find it in writing in their manuel. Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
Not really, He asked if you can hunt with an AK and I responded as long as you use a 10 rd mag (the limit in Ky as shown by the link above). Most people just seen to buy 30 round mags for AKs so he needs a 10 rounder.Geno wrote:I probably missed something. AKs are fine as long as the mag used can only hold 10 rounds or less.
7.62x39 is fine as long as they're not FMJ which is also true for all used rounds for hunting in KY

Unfortunately that seems to be very common. Just like many police seem to have no idea Ky is an open carry state, but that's a topic for another thread.Toddstang wrote:Lol! Guess he didn't know the law.

Re: Deer hunting with 7.62x39
Although, it's maybe just me, but I would feel odd hunting deer with an AK or even an AR. Something just doesn't seem right about it.
