My first and only was a Zastava N-Pap (notice I said was). Something in the design of the stock made it necessary for the user to have to bring your face very close to the rear sight to avoid painful cheek-slap from the stock. Some would say the position is similar to how many people fire an AR15 with their nose nearly touching the charging handle. I fired 10 rounds thru the N-Pap and my cheek hurt for 2 days. I absolutely did not like firing it with my face forward so ended up selling it. Wanted to change the stock but the Serbian/Zastava stock attachments points are slightly different than other manufacturers so most commonly produced replacement stocks needed to be modified to fit or wouldn't work.

I wanted to like it and it shot fine, but I could not see keeping a rifle that I had to fire in an uncomfortable shooting position in order to avoid pain. I will own another AK47 but the N-Pap wasn't for me.

Wasr go bang, just check canted sights. Ddi and and arsenal are a better fit, finish, and overall quality for a pretty good markup and things like full custom such as rifle dynamics have such a sticker shock that you likely wouldn't be interested. Especially if it's your first and you don't know if you like ak's. There are zastava's and many brands in between which are case by case quality.

you need to post up a price range to better narrow it down. At 600 or less your options are more limited than if you want to put out 1400 dollars (which I would suggest and get yourself a vintage Norinco which I am partial to :P )

For a shooter a WASR is perfect.
Russian and Chinese prebans are great collecters.

Jack & Todd are right. A good WASR is a good shooter and easy to work on. The most important thing is careful examination of the build and check that front sight is on straight & centered, especially on Century builds. My most reliable AK is a WASR I picked up at Centerfire a few years ago.

Crush, kill, mangle, maim, destroy.

It is like AR's, you can do the job with a DPMS or Anderson, but if you can afford to go with Daniel Defense, why not?
