Scope mounting options

Post by ProCroation » Sun May 17, 2015 5:52 pm

Okay, so currently I have an AMD-65 with a UTG Pro, quad rail. I've seen some people put optics way out front on the rail but I don't like that look. I want to add an optic over top of the receiver cover. So thus, my question is born.

Should I purchase a receiver cover that has a rail made on it like this one? http://m1surplus.com/images/ak_accessor ... AKMD_1.jpg

Should I purchase one of those crazy looking adapters that looks like it comes up the side of the gun and sort of "hovers" over top of the receiver cover like this one? http://cdn2.armslist.com/sites/armslist ... nt_640.jpg

Got another suggestion?

What are the pros and cons of them?

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

That receiver cover gets bumped/vibrated around alot. I have seen some expensive ones that get good reviews.

The "crazy looking" side mount rail is the way these weapons were intended to mount a scope. Using a railed top cover allows way too much slop and the optic will never retain a "zero".

Got a brand you can recommend? Are they difficult to mount? My knowledge of them, is practically nothing.

Is there an odd shaped rail on the side of the receiver? Is this an AMD 65, a regular AK, or something more exotic like a PSL?

There are 2 types of side rails, the AK type & the SVD/PSL type. It makes a difference as they are not mutually compatible.

Edit: I see It's an AMD 65, which should have an AK style rail on the left side of the receiver. You can search eBay for an AK side mount. Something like this:

Thanks guys. Looks like side mount is the way I'll go. I appreciate the input.

don't go cheap on the side rail that is installed by a good smith, Bulgarian or other good quality, and the same for the side mount, you will get years of good service.
