Cheap refinish

Post by GeminiXD9 » Thu May 01, 2014 5:38 am

So I got a cheap Romanian wood set the other day and decided to refinish it. Other than 2 spots towards the receiver end of the stock it was a nice looking set. Here it is when I picked it up

After sanding it down the wood putty, or whatever the previous owner used, wasn't staying in. Didn't come all the way out but a lot did. I was too lazy to go get more filler. So I left it. It's an ak stock anyways right? Here it is sanded from 60 grit up to 240

After degreasing it and wiping it down, I used 3 or 4 coats of minwax "Sedona red" wood stain. Just applied it nice and thick let it set for 5-10 minutes and wiped off the excess. I actually liked how this color turned out and almost left it. But was looking for a more orange tint.

After letting the stain dry for an hour or so, I got some "sunshine orange" liquid rit dye. I then rubbed it into the wood. I would coat each piece and let it set for an hour then wipe it off a little and add another rubbing. Probably 4 sets of rubbings. Here it is after the dye

I let the whole set dry for a few hours. Then I applied semi gloss polyurethane clear coat. I just bought the aerosol can and it worked fine. This is it after 4 coats with wet sanding with 1500 grit between coats. The pics don't really do it justice as it looks a lot better in hand.

:) thanks jsi. Would've looked even better if I filled in the 2 spots and took more time on it. I was impatient and it was kinda a practice run

Thanks. Came out pretty good being my first time doing something like this. And not knowing how the colors were gonna turn out. Most videos on YouTube and the web show ppl using "red mahogany" or "red oak". And scarlet rit dye. For that Russian red look. I wanted to be a little different and I like the orangish look.
