For Fed 125 JHP going from a 3" to 16" barrel bumps the vel from 1255 to 2051 fps. Were the pieces copper or lead?
Possibility whatever bullets you dad used can't take the extra velocity and thus spin a rifle barrel gives and are coming apart. It can still happen with copper plated bullets but more likely if not plated.
