I've never seen a case head blow out that bad before. I've seen plenty that blew out a chunk of rim, but never 3 different chunks at once. That must have been a wild ride and a real eye opener. I saw the blast marks on your hand, did you get burned?

Based on what you described, I would agree that either the extractor spring is too weak or the extractor has a burr or is shaped incorrectly.

I wasn't even aware the the 6.5 round was available in steel case, I've never seen any advertised.

If you do have to send it back, definitely put it back to stock because if anything needs replacing, the new parts will be removed. Sometimes they are returned, sometimes not. Better safe than sorry.
